The Prologue
Mike and Carrie were first thrown together when they went to a medical convention in LA in search for a cure for the virus Roman Brady obtained in the jungle. They were together day in and day out. Carrie fell ill after getting caught in a storm and Mike nursed her back to health. On the road they danced as they stopped for rests in Mike's convertible. At one point Mike introduced Carrie to his old med school buddy Craig. The pair always tried to one-up the other, so Mike and Carrie decided to present themselves as a couple.
Later, Mike helped Carrie uncover Sami's lies and deceipt regarding Austin and Will's true parentage. They burst into Austin and Sami's wedding and broke the news. Austin and Carrie wed on the spot, with Mike serving as Austin's best man. All the while, he tried to hide his feeling for Carrie, which were becoming more apparent to his mother, Laura.
The Story:
Franco schemed his way into Sami's good graces by pretending to help her get Austin back. Lucas's drinking problem progressed, which alarmed Austin. Sami's growing romance with Franco also disturbed Austin. Unknown to Austin, Franco was only using Sami to obtain his green card. Sami and Franco announced their engagement. To complete her family, Sami won sole custody of Will by accusing Lucas of being a drunk. She also charged that Lucas beat Will, after Lucas accidentally dropped the boy while playing with him. Since Austin and Carrie were fighting, Austin took Sami's side. On Sami and Franco's wedding day, Franco tried to kill Kate, who wanted to expose her true reason for marrying Sami. To protect his mother, Lucas shot Franco (see Franco's Murder). When Sami walked in and saw Franco dead, she fainted. A fast-thinking Kate wiped Lucas's prints off the gun and placed it in Sami's hand. Sami was charged with murder. Meanwhile, a drunken Lucas tried to escape with Will, but got into a serious car accident, which put Will into a coma for more than a month. Sami, who was unable to remember what happened the night Franco was killed, tried to keep Lucas from having custody of Will. She persuaded Austin and Carrie to act as the child's guardian. Roman suspected Kate was involved in Franco's murder. When Sami, who was out of jail, pulled a gun on them, he agreed to back off the investigation, provided Kate didn't report Sami's new crime.
Mike struggled to hide his feelings for Carrie. He applied for the hospital's Chief of Staff, a position Craig also wanted. Craig picked up on the attraction between Mike and Carrie and, with his wife Nancy's help, launched a dirty campaign to smear Mike. In an effort to take his mind off Carrie, Mike pursued a romance with nurse Ali. Eventually, Mike was named Chief Of Staff, with Carrie, his campaign manager, by his side. Craig and Nancy took jobs at the hospital, where they continued undermining Mike. Craig and Nancy manipulated the romance between Ali and Mike, which made Carrie jealous. Later, Ali applied for the position as head nurse in the same week that she slept with Mike.
After being framed for her fiancee, Franco Kelly's, murder, Sami Brady was sentenced to death. However, Lucas Roberts was racked with guilt. He was the one who shot Franco. As much as he despised Sami, he doesn't want to see his son's mother wrongfully executed. Sami escaped from prison and fled town with her brother-in-law, Austin Reed, the only person who truly believed in her innocence. Sami and Austin "kidnapped" Sami's son, Will, and found shelter in a commune with an eccentric older woman named Tracey. Eventually, Sami turned herself in, only to escape after Lucas was granted custody of Will. Sami again kidnapped her son, but her father, Captain Roman Brady, convinced her to surrender. Unfortunately, Sami's latest breakout prompted the court system to move up her execution. Guilt ridden Lucas wants to confess to the killing, but his mother, Kate, persuaded him not to. Sami's execution day arrives and the governor denied her a last minute reprieve. It looked as though her life was over. As the last drug begins to drip into her veins, Lucas stormed through the doors and confessed to the murder. Unbeknownst to him, Kate has simultaneously convinced dying mobster Roberto Barelli to admit to the killing in exchange for her promise to take care of his family. Sami's life is spared, but the question of who killed Franco still lingered. The authorities believed Roberto's confession, but Sami had her doubts.
After sharing a passionate kiss to celebrate his becoming COS, Carrie Reed and Mike Horton decided they should end their relationship since Carrie's married to Austin. Feeling he and Carrie have no future together, Mike slept with Nurse Ali McIntyre. In bed, Mike jokingly made pillow talk about Ali's attributes as future Head Nurse. Mike and Ali see each other on a social basis, but Ali gets possessive and Mike breaks it off. Carrie turns to Mike because she feels neglected by Austin, who is on the run with her sister, Sami. At the urging of the duplicitous Craig and Nancy, a jealous Ali followed Carrie and Mike to Las Vegas, where she is horrified to see them growing closer. Ali took pictures of the couple together and e-mailed them to Austin. Devastated that she lost Mike, she then slits her wrists in a pathetic attempt to get attention. Thankfully, Ali's mother rescued her before it was too late. Meanwhile a troubled Austin walked in on Carrie and Mike in bed. He punched Mike and told Carrie their marriage was over.
Later, Ali cried "Sexual Harassment," and Mike's job as Chief-of-Staff was in jeopardy. To Mike's horror, Ali won a three million dollar settlement. Eventually Austin divorced Carrie and Mike and Carrie ended up together both leaving Salem. With Carrie gone, Austin was free to be with Sami. But Austin disapproved of Sami using her typically underhanded tactics to get custody of her son Will, so Sami found a new ally and friend in Brandon Walker, who offered to take the low road with her, if necessary, to get her son back away from the child's father Lucas. This story led to such plots as the Brandon/Sami/Austin/Greta story and the Coronation Massacre.
