The Story:
|
In the late summer of 1984, Hope Williams was married to Larry Welch, aspiring District Attorney with dreams of political grandeur. He was controlled by a shady group called The Cartel, which was led by New Orleans banker Maxwell Hathaway. The Cartel backed Larry's political campaign for Lt. Governor in order to ease their illegal dealings. Maxwell's daughter, Megan Hathaway, was Bo Brady's high school sweetheart; she continously tried to get Bo to fall in love with her. Bo, in turn, was the man Hope truly loved. After many agonizing months, Bo and Hope realized their love for each other. However, Bo was being manipulated by Maxwell into working for The Cartel. Knowing that he was the power behind Larry, Bo desired to find out more about Maxwell and The Cartel. So he continued not to like Hope, and Hope continued her miserable marriage to Larry. |

Soon after Maxwell lost the Prism, he was murdered by none other than Andre DiMera. He had returned to Salem on orders of his uncle Stefano. Andre, Tony's cousin, had plastic surgery to make him look identical to Tony. Stefano was very much alive even though he had "died" in the icy waters of the Salem River some months prior. Stefano was the true leader of The Cartel. Stefano, however, was dying. He had a brain tumor which he believed could only be cured by three prisms. The prism from New Orleans had been of those. When the three prisms were united and held under a laser beam, they would disclose various technological and medical breakthroughs, including the directions on how to cure Stefano's tumor. He dedicated himself to acquire the Prisms, and enlisted the help of his daughter, Megan Hathaway!
|
Meanwhile, the second Prism was underneath everyone's noses. Daphne DiMera had the precious object in the form of a necklace in her jewelry collection. One night, Calliope Jones saw the necklace and begged Daphne to let her use the necklace for an upcoming fashion shoot in Haiti. Daphne agreed on the terms that she come along on the shoot. Roman Brady also decided to come along on the shoot. However, he declined at the last minute after he began receiving death threats from Stefano.
Shane Donovan, Larry's butler, was revealed to be an undercover spy for the ISA. He was investigating The Cartel and the three Prisms. Sensing that Kimberly had knowledge of the Prisms, he spied on her. Meanwhile, Larry continued his campaign for Lt. Governor by pretending to have a good marriage to Hope. He also announced that his wife was expecting. If he won the election, the next step The Cartel wanted was to make him President.
Megan went after him and manipulated him into helping them smuggle the third Prism out of the Soviet Union. Larry reluctantly agreed.
Stefano found out where the second Prism was and had Andre sneak aboard the plane to Haiti, the location of the fashion shoot, disguised as a co-pilot. He also sent his minion, Kate Honeycutt, to aid Andre.
The plane left for the ill-fated
voyage in early November carrying several Salemites. Anna,
Tony, and Daphne DiMera, Liz Curtis, Carlo Forenza, Eugene
Bradford, Calliope Jones, Bo Brady, and Hope Williams. And
of course, Andre and Honeycutt. On the way to Haiti, the
pilot suffered a heart attack and died. Andre took over the
plane and crashed it on Stefano's island located in the
Bermuda Triangle. Everyone was separated from everyone else
on the island. Eugene and Calliope were stranded together,
Bo & Hope together, Carlo and Liz together, and Andre
& Anna together. Andre pretended to be Tony, while Tony
was elsewhere on the island. Daphne suffered extreme
injuries from the crash and died in Andre's arms. While
trying to steal the Prism, Tony sabotaged the radio
equipment on the plane to keep the others from seeking help.

|
Meanwhile, Tony was in a cave and met Jasmine, an exotic island inhabitor. In the end, the prism bounced from person to person, finally reaching Tony, who gave it to Jasmine for safekeeping. Andre came looking for the Prism and engaged in a fight with Tony. Re-creating their fight earlier that year, Andre and Tony dueled with bamboo sticks. During the fight, they both fell into a pool of quicksand. While Tony was saved by Jasmine, Andre sank into his gritty demise. Anna came upon Tony afterwards, but thought he was Andre and held a gun to him. Tony stopped her from shooting him and convinced her he was Tony by answering two things: how much money he invested in DiMera Designs and secondly, someone's name. Eventually, Tony and Jasmine joined the other crash survivors. |

In Salem, Roman feared that Stefano had been behind the plane crash. He'd been threatening him, and Roman bailed out of the trip at the last moment. He decided to put a stop to Stefano once and for all. He met with the ISA, who paired him up with another one of their agents, Shane Donovan. Shane told Roman about an island of Stefano's, and they went there to rescue the victims of the plane crash. Meanwhile, Larry continued to make illicit dealings with a Soviet contact in order to smuggle the third Prism out of the U.S.S.R. Just as the race for Lt. Governor came to a close, Larry's background was exposed. His father had been Victor Chorvat, an American scientist charged with treason for selling secrets to the Soviets; he also happened to have invented the three Prisms. Although Larry thought this ruined his career for sure, he pleaded with the voters to pray for his missing wife and their "child" (Hope wasn't really pregnant.) Surprisingly, the voters reacted sympathetically with Larry and elected him Lt. Governor.
After they arrived and found the survivors, Roman took the prism from Jasmine. Stefano, who was on the island, had Petrov kidnap Hope in order to lure Roman to him. It worked. Stefano appeared to Roman and held a gun to him and demanded the Prism. They made their way to the top of a cliff. Roman was silent while Stefano went into a long diatribe about their similarities. Stefano admitted that he admired Roman as an opponent because they were alike. They both put family above everything else. During his speech, Stefano got a headache from his tumor. Roman took this opportunity to take the gun away from Stefano. During the struggle, the gun went off and shot Roman in the stomach, sending him off the cliff to his death.
|
Bo witnessed the entire episode from below and rushed to the site where Roman's body landed. Roman was close to death. Bo took him in his arms and rocked him, telling his big brother that he couldn't die. Roman died in his brother's arms. While Bo went to get help from the others, Stefano took Roman's body, thus acquiring the Prism. When Bo returned, Roman's body was gone and they assumed that it had been washed out to sea. Once having reached contact with the coast guard, everyone returned to Salem and broke the horrible news to everyone: Roman and Daphne were dead. Meanwhile, Shane kept a watchful eye on Honeycutt, who he suspected of being on Stefano's payroll. |

With one Prism in his possession, Stefano was in a hurry to get the other two. He sent Kate Honeycutt back to New Orleans to find the first Prism, which Bo had thrown in the river. "Dredge the entire Bayou if you have to!" In a matter of days, Honeycutt located the Prism. Alligator poachers had found it in the stomach of one of their catches. Shane followed Honeycutt and hoped that she would lead him straight to Stefano.

Once everyone was back in Salem, Larry's career as Lt. Governor came to a screeching halt. At a televised press conference welcoming home the survivors of the crash, Hope took the liberty of revealing to everyone Larry's connection to The Cartel. Furthermore, she informed everyone that he had faked her pregnancy to keep away from Larry...and that she only loved Bo Brady. This humiliation forced Larry to resign as Lt. Governor. The Cartel's plan had been ruined.
At around this time, Marlena was devastated by Roman's death and shut everyone out of her life. However, she received sympathy cards from anyone and everyone who had known Roman and her. One person's letters in particular touched her heart. It was a man by the name of Jimmy Porterfield, who had been one of Marlena's faithful listeners back when she had a radio show. Marlena found herself very comfortable around Jimmy and befriended him. She eventually went to his home for dinner, and met his godmother, a rather large woman named Mrs. Lafferty. Unbeknownst to Marlena, Mrs. Lafferty was none other than Stefano! Meanwhile, Marlena decided to bring Stefano down by investigating his Triad Experiment. With Eugene's help, Marlena was able to break into the ISA's computer database and locate Stefano's Venezuelan compound.
In the meantime, Megan had resolved to kill Hope. At the Body Connection, she planned to kill Hope in an electrocuted hot tub. While waiting for Hope to appear, Megan heard Larry talking with his Soviet contact, Leopold Bronsky. At this time, Bronsky told Larry that it was Larry's father, a "brilliant scientist," who had created the three prisms and perfected their power. Bronsky told Larry that his father had been contacted by Stefano because he was in search of the third prism, in order to cure his brain tumor. Larry couldn't believe that they really existed, noting that it sounded like something from a science fiction movie. Bronsky told Larry that the prism would arrive during the ice show, and he would get it delivered to Stefano. The prism would change colors...first light blue, then dark blue, then green, yellow and orange and finally red. When it became red, it will explode in a few minutes. Their discussion was quite serious, as Bronsky revealed that the third Prism was volatile (it was actually a bomb) and could destroy the entire city of Salem, as well as most of the state. Larry immediately wanted to help stop the prism from coming to Salem. Bronsky told him not to try to stop it, but to just get his loved ones out of Salem. Megan was enraged at hearing this and had a vicious argument with Larry. During the argument, Larry accidentally caused Megan to fall against the wall and then put her into the hot tub, electrocuting her.
Meanwhile, Kimberly got more involved in the Prism mystery than she'd ever wanted to. It had been because of Kimberly that Shane had been able to locate Stefano's island (she'd taken photos of the place while on an ISA mission some years before.) Now, she decided to extract information from Bronsky by seducing him. By getting him drunk and pretending to sleep with him, Kim discovered that the last Prism would soon arrive in Salem with an ice-skating troupe. At the same time, we found out just why the last Prism was so dangerous: Victor Chorvat had devised the Third Prism so that it would cause a massive explosion if its ice covering melted.
The ice-skating troupe finally made it to Salem, planning to perform at the Salem Civic Center. Wanting to help Bo, who had joined the ISA in order to bring down Stefano and avenge Roman's death, Hope infiltrated the troupe to get the Prism. Bo went to the civic center the night before the show and got the prism, by chipping it out of an ice sculpture that it had been hidden inside of. However, Stefano's operatives found him and he was forced to run, dropping the prism in the process. He was taken by Jimmy Porterfield to Stefano's hideout. Bo of course got away and went back for the prism. In the meantime, the Zamboni machine had cleaned the ice and the prism had been swept into the ice and re-frozen. Hope got herself locked into the Civic Center for the night, hoping to meet up with Bo. She decided to pass the time by ice skating. After her performance, she reunited with Bo, but immediately tripped on the ice. After Bo teased her for her lack of gracefullness, they looked at the ice and saw the prism inside the ice. Bo chipped away at it and again freed the prism.

The story of the Three Prisms climaxed at the ice show. Stefano, after having an earth-shattering argument with Tony in which they aired out their dirty laundry, sent his agent Sonia to retrieve the Prism from Hope. The Prism, which was accidentally sewn into her costume, was growing more volatile by the minute. Hope went out on the ice to keep the Prism away from Sonia. In the end, she was able to get the Prism and made her way to the rafters above the stage, where Stefano awaited. Their getaway helicopter was waiting on the roof of the Civic Center. As they made their way across the catwalk, Marlena showed up brandishing a gun. Marlena, whose children Sami and Eric had recently been kidnapped by Stefano (Bo saved them), had had enough. She was ready to kill Stefano for all the grief he had caused her and her family. Stefano never thought for a moment that Marlena would shoot him; he was wrong. As he stepped closer to her planning to take her with him, she fired the gun, shooting him in the chest. The shot caused Stefano to drop the Prism, which fell on some oily rags and began a raging fire. Stefano then lost his balance and fell into the inferno below. |

Shane courageously risked his life to get the prism before it exploded. Just seconds until the explosion, Shane put it on ice and gave it back to Bo. As they were ready to leave, Honeycutt and Jimmy Porterfield showed up with the intention of snatching back the Prism. In the ensuing melée, Hope was shot. In the end, Jimmy and Honeycutt were captured, and the Prism remained in safe hands.
After the fire at the rink was put out, a charred body was discovered among the debris. Everyone assumed this was the body of Stefano. Marlena was charged with his murder (the charges were dropped after the D.A., Hart Bennett, proclaimed Marlena's innocence and threw the case -- he later committed suicide after being disbarred.) Hope lapsed into a coma after being shot, but woke up a couple of days later to find Bo at her bedside. He then proposed marriage, to which she emotionally said yes. Kimberly grew closer to Shane as a result of their teamwork, and his help in keeping her dirty past secret (she'd been a prostitute in Europe). Jimmy Porterfield went to prison, while Honeycutt eventually went free. And the Third Prism? Shane, bitter at the anguish this invention had caused him and half of Salem, dropped it into the Atlantic Ocean, never to be seen again.
