You'd think by now they'd learn that if you don't actually see the body buried, the victim is not really dead. (And once, they did see the body buried--but she wasn't really dead.) Some of these deaths happened in Salem and were seen onscreen, but others happened elsewhere, with the character returning to Salem to surprise a relative or friend years later. Those "death" stories were often retold in flashbacks. Some "deaths" lasted only a few hours, while others spanned several years. Of course it's Stefano who has been presumed dead more than anyone else, with 9 deaths total. Deaths are organized by year, according to the date of death.

identity search, John Black discovered he was Forrest,
Lawrence's brother. Tommy Horton,
Jr. 1967? MIA in the Korean
War 1967 "Mark," a doctor,
appeared at University Hospital, haunted by memories of the
war, but no other memories. Mark fell in love with Marie
Horton. Mark was later discovered to be Tommy (who had
plastic surgery), which meant Marie was in love with her
brother. Rachel Blake ? Stefano became obsessed
with Rachel while he was in Aremid years earlier and wanted
her to divorce her husband and marry her. When she refused
he grew angry. Rachel contacted John Black, then a young
priest, to confess to. Stefano then tried to kill both her
and her husband by setting off an explosion in their
car. 1996 After living as the "Lady
in White" for an extended period of time in Aremid, it is
eventually revealed that the woman is Rachel Blake, Kristen
and Peter's mom. She was still badly scarred from the car
accident. Mickey Horton 1973 After suffering a heart
attack, Mickey spent a long period in the hospital.
Emotionally unstable due to Michael's problems, Mickey
suffered a blinding head pain that eventually took his
memory with it. Disoriented, Mickey didn't see any obvious
symptoms, so he got up and walked out of the hospital. His
family, not knowing where he was, believed he might be dead.
By July, he ended up in a farm house where Maggie Simmons
lived. 1974 Mickey (calling himself
Marty Hansen) wanted Maggie to receive treatment and surgery
at University Hospital. He was nearly reunited with his
family, but Maggie had second thoughts about the surgery and
they went back to the farm. Soon after, his photo was taken
for the newspaper after he won a farming prize. The Hortons
saw the photo and eventually tracked him down to the
Brookville farm. Although he still had amnesia, he reunited
with his family. His memory came back two years later when
he found proof that Bill had fathered his son,
Mike. David Banning 1975 Emotionally distraught,
David drove his car off a bridge and plunged into the water
below. He was presumed dead by drowning when no body was
found. 1975 David lived with the
Grant family during his time away from Salem. Paul Grant
eventually realized who David was and he went to tell Julie,
who was thrilled that her son was alive. Brooke
Hamilton 1977 Brooke's car was involved
in a high-speed chase with the police. Hours later, someone
wearing Brooke's locket was taken into the ER and was later
pronounced dead. It was presumed that the woman was Brooke.
A memorial service was held in July. 1978 She returned
as Anderson Manufacturing employee Stephanie Woodruff.
The woman who had died in the accident had been a hitchhiker
that Brooke had picked up on her way out of town. After the
accident, Brooke had undergone experimental surgery in
another city to reconstruct her burned face and assumed an
entirely new identity. Britta Englund 1979 She was thought to have
been killed in a fire in Stockholm. February 17,
1986. She was travelling with
Lars in Sweden disguised as a man. Anna Brady October or November
1977 She "fell" off a
small boat that she and Roman had rented to celebrate her
pregnancy and she was thought to have drowned 1982 Anna had been held on a
ship, but returned to Salem with her daughter (and Roman's)
in 1982, just in time to delay his impending
marriage. Marina Toscano 1980 She fell off a yacht
in Italy and was presumed drowned. September 7,
1989 She was in Salem going
under the name Donna D'Angelo and got in a small car
accident with Kayla Johnson. She returned to get Steve's
help in finding the Toscano key. Emma Donovan 1980 or 1981 ***death not shown
onscreen May 6, 1985 Emma was brainwashed by
the Dragon. She was spying on Donovan Manor, and later
she was revealed to be working with the Dragon. She tried to
kill Bo and Hope at their wedding. Shane first saw her at
the masquerade ball Mickey Horton 1982 Mickey and
Don learned that there was blackmail going on between Evan
and Alex (working for Stefano). Mickey went to Caracas to
look for Stefano and was held prisoner by Stefano's men.
They made it look as if he died and taunted him by showing
him pictures of his memorial service in Salem. April 1983 For months, he had tried
to escape from Stefano and finally managed to do
it and get on a plane to Salem.
He was unaware that Stefano was dead and was
trying to get home to Maggie & Melissa before Stefano
could hurt them. When he tried calling home from a
payphone saying he was Mickey, people thought he was a
sick prankster. Finally, he reached his house but when
he saw that it was empty, he went upstairs to look for
Maggie. Then Maggie and Don came into the house and
shared a kiss. At that moment, Mickey came downstairs and
saw them together...and had a heart attack. Marlena Evans 1982 Salem Strangler kills
Samantha Evans, but Salemites believe it is Marlena and
initially mourn her. May 1982 Marlena arrived at
the house she and Don had on the lake. She had
just flown in from Colorado, where she had been while
everyone thought she was dead. Stefano DiMera March 1983 He was in jail
waiting for his trial date (for kidnapping Liz and Marlena),
and suffered a stroke while talking to Renee just before a
hearing; he was declared dead on the operating table at
University Hospital. Feburary 1984 Stefano returned under
the code name "The Phoenix". He had payed off a nurse in
prison to keep his secret that he had not died. He had the
body of another inmate tagged as his own. Cal Winters 1983 He was presumed to have
died while on reconnaisance flight over Cambodia. March 1989 He was rescued with great
fanfare from a POW camp where he had been locked up in
a tiger cage. Roman Brady February 13,
1984 Roman fakes his death so
he can find who the real Salem Slasher is February 20,
1984 He came into Marlena's
bedroom dressed as Don Craig and wearing a "Don" latex
mask and took it off in front of her. Not only was he
proving to her that he was alive, but he was also
showing her how the killer had managed to get so close to
his victims and frame him for the murders. Stefano DiMera May 10, 1984 He and Petrov were
escaping the Concert Hall but Alex happened to be drunk and
taking a nap in their limo. When he saw what was going on he
and Stefano started going at it. Meanwhile, Petrov lost
control of the car and it plunged into the Salem River. Date

1984 He was shown to be
Megan Hathaway's father and the person behind the entire
Prisms plot. Petrov May 10, 1984 October or November of
1984 Andre DiMera 1984 Andre and
Tony dueled with bamboo sticks on the exotic island. During
the fight, they both fell into a pool of quicksand. While
Tony was saved by Jasmine, Andre sank into his gritty
demise. We later
discovered that Andre didn't die at this time. He took
Tony's place in Aremid, since he believed he was dying of a
fatal blood disease. With Stefano's help, Andre, posing as
Tony, committed suicide, framing John for "Tony's murder."
John was nearly executed because of this
incident. Nicholas
Alamain October 1984 After Carly gave birth,
she was told the child had died. Vivian had taken the boy to
raise as her own. 1992 Nicholas arrived in Salem
looking for his "Auntie Viv." It was later discovered that
he was the boy Carly had lost. Roman Brady November 28,
1984 Anna, Tony,
and Daphne DiMera, Liz Curtis, Carlo Forenza, Eugene
Bradford, Calliope Jones, Bo Brady, and Hope Williams. went
to an island somewhere. Stefano, who was on the island, had
Petrov kidnap Hope in order to lure Roman to him. It worked.
Stefano appeared to Roman and held a gun to him and demanded
the Prism. They made their way to the top of a cliff. Roman
was silent while Stefano went into a long diatribe about
their similarities. Stefano admitted that he admired Roman
as an opponent because they were alike. They both put family
above everything else. During his speech, Stefano got a
headache from his tumor. Roman took this opportunity to take
the gun away from Stefano. During the struggle, the gun went
off and shot Roman in the stomach, sending him off the cliff
to his death. Bo and Hope saw him float to shore. Bo and
Hope rushed up to a dying Roman and Hope left to get help.
After his last breath, he died. Bo vowed to kill Stefano
Dimera. Bo rushed into the jungle and told everyone of
Roman's death. Meanwhile, Stefano escaped. Bo returned to
the shore to find Roman's body gone. We saw Roman in a
warehouse with Stefano holding him hostage. 1986 (not really),
1991 A man named
the Pawn arrived in Salem. After searching for his identity,
he "discovered" he was Roman Brady. Marlena was finally
reunited with her love, until "Roman" found out that he was
Forrest Alamain (aka. John Black). In the 1990s, the real
Roman Brady returned and was put in a coma. He later
returned again in 1996, in a wheelchair, dying from a
mysterious virus. Stefano DiMera February 22,
1985 Burned in a fire in the
Ice Rink after being shot by Marlena Nov. 4, 1988 Stefano returns to Salem,
seeking revenge on Roman, who he believed had caused his
son's deafness. Claus Van
Zandt 1985 Curtis Reed Mid-1980's ***death not shown
onscreen July 27, 1993 Billie sees the parking
lot shooter that tried to kill John Black and notices that
it's her father. He had been underground working for the
mob. Eugene
Bradford July 1986 He was presumed dead when
his Time Machine was found burned in the woods. July 1986 He wasn't dead, but being
held prisoner by Dr. Vertigo. Marlena Brady December 19,
1986 Marlena was
last seen in her and Roman/John's house. The house went up
in flames, as did Doc (so it seemed). John did find her
wedding ring, however, and did not believe she was
dead. March 1987 Marlena, of
course, wasn't dead. She was being held prisoner on some
exotic island taking care of two children (Orpheus').
Marlena Brady April 23, 1987 A few weeks
later a plane crashed off the Caribbean island holding
Marlena, whom Orpheus was sending away, since he knew Roman
was there looking for her. This time, Roman/John accepted
Marlena's death. August 1991 Then
somehow, years later, Doc returned after being held captive
by Stefano on yet another island. Hmmm, never have quite
figured that one out. Kimberly Brady April 30, 1987 Gillian planted a
bomb in Kimberly's car and it exploded. May 1, 1987 Kimberly stops Gillian's
wedding to Shane and tells everyone how she would be dead if
Peachy hadn't discovered the bomb in the car at the nick of
time. Diana Colville May 16, 1988 Jose Torres found
out that Diana was taping their conversations and ordered
Roman (John) to shoot her as a sign of loyalty (Roman was
trying to infiltrate Torres' organization.) Outside in
the garden, Roman shot Diana in cold blood in the face. Jose
checked the body to make sure she was dead. May 16, 1988 It was later shown that
Diana had gotten out of the way thanks to Abe, who was
hidden. Then he had planted a body from the
morgue to pass off as Diana's corpse. Nick Corelli November 14,
1988 His car was run off the
road by Eve's friends and it was involved in a fiery
explosion December 1988 A strange hooded man with
bandages is seen following Eve. Later this guy is
picked up by Steve and it's Nick. Steve took care of
him until he was ready to reveal himself. Eve later
convinced him to have plastic surgery to restore his badly
burned face. Orion Hawk December 2,
1988 He was presumed to have
been killed when Stefano's island compound blew

28,1988 He showed up at Steve
& Kayla's loft to claim his rights as Benjy's only
surviving relative. Shane Donovan July 24, 1989 Kim and Cal see on the
ISA computer that Shane is labeled as "terminated". The
ISA assures her that he went missing during a case

mountain. September 6,
1989 He awakens in a
field and suffers from amnesia. He met Rebecca, who was
running from her husband. She eventually discovered Shane's
identity, but kept it from him, since she'd fallen in love.
Shane eventually discovered who he was and returned to Salem
in time to see Kimberly cozying up with Cal. Arthur Downey October 6,
1989 Arthur was tracking his
wife Rebecca to get revenge for her testifying against him,
and Shane seemingly killed him with a knife. December 1,
1989 Arthur had not died and
placed another body to make Shane & Rebecca believe he
was dead. After Shane & Rebecca found out he was alive,
they went to his office, where Arthur tried
to shoot Rebecca. Ernesto
Toscano Late 1989 Ernesto had faked his own
death in order to seek revenge against Victor
Kiriakis. May 1990 He shows up as the
mastermind behind Bo's kidnapping. Anjelica
Devereaux March 16, 1990 Her plane to Buenos Aires
crashes upon take-off while escaping town with
Alexander January 23,
1991 She hadn't been on the
plane that crashed, but rather hiding out while everyone
believed she was dead. She was poor, destitute and wanted
Alexander to have a good life, so she contacted Johnny
Corelli to return Alexander to Justin &

Corelli, who brought him back to Salem to be reunited with
his father, Justin. Hope Brady July 1990 Hope went
looking for Bo on the island, when he told her to stay put.
She was caught by Ernesto and no one knew it. He gathered
Julie, John (who was Roman), Isabella, and Bo in a room. He
told them he had a magic show. In the room was a gigantic
vat of acid and this huge covered cage contraption over it.
When Ernesto removed the cover, there was Hope locked in the
cage. He told them it was the last time they would see Hope.
Bo pleaded for him to let her go and take him, but Ernesto
refused. Ernesto told Hope to say goodbye to her family
because they were going on a trip. He also told Bo not to
come near the cage and try to save her because he would drop
her in. She told everyone goodbye and then gave a special
goodbye to Bo. As Bo ran to save her, Ernesto gave a magic
word and there was an explosion. When the smoke cleared she
was gone and the cage was broken. 1994 A woman
resembling Hope was living at Maison Blanche when many
Salemites visited the plantation in 1994. The woman had
amnesia, but was eventually proven to be Hope. In 1998, it
was revealed that Hope never fell into the acid. At the last
minute, Greta, an actress, took her place in the cage and
was the one who was burned. Howard Hawkins
II August 1991 October 1991 His death was
all part of an elaborate con to steal Jack Deveraux's

and all the evidence and witness accounts pointed to Carly

for her annulment of their marriage Stefano DiMera December 4,
1991 Died in a fire in the
Mayan Pyramid 9/17/93 Stefano was brought to
Salem, suffering frrom a brain tumor. He had spent the last
few years in Europe. Carly Manning July 16, 1993 An insane
Vivian began injecting cleaning fluid into the IVs of
Carly's patients to frame Carly. Carly accidentally got a
dose of morphine, and once unconscious, Vivian took the
opportunity to fill her with herbs that induced a death-like
paralysis. Carly was pronounced dead and was buried. While
buried, Vivian communicated with her via a walkie talkie in
her coffin. August 6, 1993 Vivian
eventually told Lawrence and she was dug up.

1994 When the bodies of two
women were found in Pine Haven, everyone thought it was

fleeing Maison Blanche with Hope. He got away when John

Salem Inn and was revealed to be behind
Celeste's ploy to make Gina go into trances. Kate Roberts March 29, 1995 Her plane crashed
into the Eagle River. She survived, but everyone believed
she'd perished. Vivian attempted to drug the pilot of the

5, 1996 Appeared on a fishing
boat, where she'd been living after being rescued at sea.
After many weeks, Kate manages to return to Salem and walks
in on Vivian and Victor just as they are about to make
love. Marlena Evans June 30, 1995 The devil takes Marlena's
soul and she's presumed dead July 18, 1995 After Belle says, "Mama,"
John begins to believe Marlena isn't dead. Marlena is
finally freed of the devil a couple weeks later and is alive
again, thanks to John and Father Francis Tony DiMera 1995 Framed John for his death
by committing suicide 2002 In 2002, Tony returned to
Salem and it was revealed that Andre had taken Tony's place
and was the one who actually killed himself. Stefano DiMera June 12, 1996. Stefano was believed to
have been killed when the plane carrying him and Marlena
exploded. June 17, 1996 It's confirmed that the
explosion had been a ploy and Stefano is in an unknown
location with a drugged Marlena. Marlena Evans Summer 1996 Marlena is kidnapped by
Stefano and there is a plane crash and almost everybody
thinks Marlena is dead 1996 Marlena is actually being
held in a cage in Paris Hope Brady 1996 When Jude
found out that Hope was an undercover cop trying to bring
his shady club down in Salem, Jude took advantage of the
fact that Hope was presumed dead in an avalanche. He rescued
her, took her to a cabin outside of Aremid where he nursed
her back to health, only planning to rape her for
revenge. 1996 She was
later rescued by Bo, not before he was shot by Jude.
Stefano DiMera August 14,
1996 Stefano was killed in an
explosion in the Paris underground. October 4,
1996 He reveals himself to
Peter in Paris and tells him that he can help
him regain Jennifer's love & trust. Peter Blake November 26,
1996 Jack learned of Peter's
plan to kidnap Jennifer. He accidentally shot Peter during a
struggle at the Deveraux house. Peter was rushed to the
hospital, but was pronounced dead. Jack subsequently went to
jail for his murder. 12/4/96 Stefano had actually sent
Peter to a jungle island to recover from his injury. While
there, he contracted the same mystery illness that Roman
suffered from. The first Salemite to discover he is alive is
Laura Horton, who has been kidnapped by Stefano and Peter,
in order to erase her memory. 1997 Roman was away on an ISA
mission and was believed to have died. 1997 Kristen found Roman, who
was ill with a mysterious virus, and brought him back to
Salem, just in time to interrupt John and Marlena's
wedding. Jennifer
Horton February 1998 Stefano tipped Peter off
that Dayton was a trap. In Dayton, Peter found the circus
and talked extensively with a woman named Laverne. Peter
pursued Jennifer, but Jennifer's car crashed an exploded in
flames. Peter turned his car around and came upon Japsar at
a payphone. Jaspar had called the police and was about to
tell them something when Peter attacked him, which caused
him to fall into a coma. Jack was captured and sent back to
prison. Upon inspection of the stationwagon Jen was driving,
the police found a woman's remains and a necklace that had
an inscription "To Jen from Peter." Everyone believed that
Jen was dead. 1998 Jack was let out of
prison to attend her funeral. Peter also attended and
brandished a machine gun. Suddenly, Jennifer appeared above
the coffin as an angel and convinced Peter to turn himself
in. In jail, Stefano finally gave Peter the cure, but told
him that he could not help him get out of jail because it
would ruin his new reputation. Peter agreed to plead guilty
for a lighter sentence. Jack, now free, returned home with
Abby and were shocked to find Jen waiting there. Jen told
them that she, Jaspar, and the circus people set the entire
thing up. Jen told Jack that she thought Jaspar had told
them about it, but Jack told Jen that Jaspar was put into a
coma. In the end, Jaspar pulled through and
recovered. Kristen Blake Spring 1998 Penelope was killed, and
Kristen sent Susan away to an Arab country and took her
place. Edmund figured it out eventually and traded up Susan
and Kristen. Kristen is still presumed dead but is really in
the Arab country. John Black July 1999 John disappears in the
ocean when he goes to rescue a drowning woman...after
finding his bloody clothes, Marlena and Bo believe he is
dead 1999 John was actually shot
with a tranquilizer gun and dragged onboard a ship by Gina.
There she convinced him it was 1985. It was quite some time
before he made it back to Marlena Hope Brady 1999 Princess Gina decided to
go to Salem and live life as Hope so she could marry Bo. She
nearly succeeded, but on New Years Eve, her cover was blown
and she was shot by Bo and later died. 2000 Hope wasn't really dead.
Greta revealed that the dead woman was really her mother,
Princess Gina. The search began for Hope, who was later
found in the turret of Gina's castle along with
Stefano. Stefano DiMera 2002 Stefano left town in June
2001. Tony returned to town with his father's ashes in 2002,
saying he'd died out of town. The Salem PD tested the ashes
and knows they aren't Stefano's. Still, Stefano's will has
been read. Hope Brady November 2002 Kidnapped by Larry and
presumed dead after her bloody sweater was found 2002 Bo finally put the pieces
together and Hope was found by Bo on Fancy Face 2. In a
struggle, Larry was shot but was wearing a bullet proof vest
and was thrown over board. Abe Carver 2003 Abe Carver was the first
victim of the Salem Stalker. He was shot near his home and
left for dead on the day of his son's christening. When he
didn't appear at the church in time for his son's
christening, his family and friends began looking for him.
He was found by Roman and John, laying in his front yard,
with a gunshot in his neck. While John called paramedics and
began CPR, Roman headed back to the church to tell everyone
that Abe had been found. While everyone at the church was
shocked about what had happened to Abe, none of them was
completely surprised. Tom's ghost had spoken Abe's name.
Alice had visions and heard unsettling voices. Celeste had
visions of the christening turning into a funeral, and of
something terrible happening at the stroke of noon.
Jennifer, while devastated, was nonetheless relieved that
her own husband had not been the victim. Abe died a few days
later. 2004 Jack Deveraux October 14th 2003 Jack was knocked out by a
gloved hand swinging a brick. Lexie explains to a shaken
Jennifer that Jack is not going to survive and that his
living will won't allow him to be kept alive artificially.
Jennifer and Abby head to Jack's room to be with him. As
Jennifer stands near Jack's bed, Lexie advises her that Jack
is now brain dead and that she needs to determine if Jack
can be an organ donor. While Abby doesn't want her to "kill
her father," Jennifer eventually comes around and okays the
procedure. As Abby cries,Jennifer nods to Lexie who shuts
off Jack's life support. 2004 Maggie Horton 2003 Mickey and Maggie
Horton were attacked by the killer. Mickey goes
downstairs only to find Maggie beaten and slashed by a
liquor bottle. As he tries to call for help, he is stabbed
with a scalpel. Mickey's wound was only minor. Maggie
finally regains consciousness and it looks as if she will
name the killer, but her mind is distracted due to her
injuries. Later, Lexie calls Mickey into the trauma room;
Maggie has taken a turn for the worse. The Horton family
gathers around Maggie's deathbed. Mickey says goodbye and
she passes away peacefully. He, Hope and Jennifer share
memories of his beloved wife. 2004 Caroline Brady 2003 Caroline Brady was
killed next, in the first death by poison. The killer
taunted Bo about his failing to protect his mother. Roman,
Hope and Jennifer give eulogies for Abe, Jack and Maggie,
respectively. Bo's PDA beeps and he is notified that his
mother's time is up. Bo goes into the chapel to get his
mother and finds her dead. She passed away while kneeling in
prayer. Caroline's death in the church rocks the Brady
family to the core. The autopsy shows the cause of
Caroline's death to be poisoning. 2004 Cassie DiMera 2003 The next victim of the
Salem Stalker was Cassie DiMera. Cassie figures out
who the killer is! She emails Rex that she knows who is
framing him and she is going to the police. She then leaves
Roman a message to meet her at the police department, but he
can't find her anywhere. At the Salem Fall Celebration,
Lucas, Roman, Shawn and Sami are there when Cassie's
bloodied, dead body falls from a piñata. Kate is
standing nearby, in shock, clutching a bloody
knife. 2004 Victor
Kiriakis 2004 Jan Spears and Nicole
Kiriakis electrocuted Victor in the bathtub. 2004 Roman Brady 2004 Roman Brady was
the next victim of the Stalker. He was killed on the day of
his wedding to Kate Roberts and was presumed
dead. 2004 Tony DiMera Tony was mauled by a
tiger, then poisoned by Marlena at the hospital. This was
when we first learned that Marlena was the
killer. 2004 Doug Williams 2004 Doug Williams
