Mara Purl |
(nurse
Darla, 1986)
While maintaining rich acting and authoring
careers, Purl and her partner Erin Gray (Buck Rogers and Silver
Spoons) have joined with Haven House domestic violence shelter in Los
Angeles to push for increased education and communication about
issues of violence. A public service announcement on family violence
that the actresses wrote and produced recently nabbed them a
Peacepower award for their efforts to promote peace in the lives of
women. "What we feel most grateful about is that our being recognized
will bring more attention to the plight of victims of domestic
violence," Purl commented. Purl, who has written the first three of a
12-novel series, has included a domestic violence storyline in her
books. "Sometimes this seems to be such an impersonal issue-"This
could never happen to me, or to anyone I know." "But that isn't
true," Purl said. "Every few seconds a woman is battered somewhere in
the world. We have it within us to take a stand against personal
violence." The PSA, available through Gray and Purl's domestic
violence web site at http://www.familyinternet.com/family_health/domestic_violence/index.html,
was selected by a Peacepower committee as the winner for the
television public service announcement category. In recent years,
Mara also created the first environmental radio soap opera,
Milford-Haven (www.milfordhaven.com),
wrote three of twelve serial novels: What the Heart Knows,
Closer Than You Think, and Child Secrets, and
co-authored a book of acting tips and anecdotes called Act
Right with actress Erin Gray. She performs koto (Japanese harp)
for the Jerome Robbins ballet "Watermill" regularly with the New York
City Ballet and serves as an advisory board member for Haven House,
the oldest domestic violence shelter in the United States. Mara now
serves on the Board of L.A. District Attorney Gil Garcetti's Crime
Prevention Foundation. You can visit her official website here:
