The Backstory
This troubling story began, when Kayla Brady(sister to Bo, Roman and Kimberly) was hired to be a nurse to the dying Jack Deveraux. Jack had Hodgkin's Disease, and needed constant care.
Around this time, Patch and his sister Adrienne, discovered that Jack Deveraux, was really their long lost little brother, Billy Johnson, whom their mother had had to give up for adoption. A rich family, the Deveraux's, adopted him, thus making his childhood significantly different, and more privileged, than the one Patch and Adrienne endured.
Patch was distraught over this news for several reasons. One, he was still dealing with the painful memories of living in an orphanage with his baby brother, then watching him get snatched away, while no one wanted him, because he was too old to adopt. But most importantly, his brother was dying, and the one person that seemed to give him a reason to try and fight for his life, was Kayla. It was clear to Patch, that he and Jack were in love with the same woman.
Patch then decided to let Jack have Kayla. He began mistreating Kayla to the point where he finally told her, that he did not love her anymore. Heartbroken, Kayla accepted Jack's marriage proposal, thinking that she would give Jack some happiness in the remaining time he had left.
Steve had some of Kayla's medicine tested by the ISA, because he noticed that Kayla got better when she stopped taking it for a while. Gabrielle, the ISA agent, owed him a favor and was able to confirm that Kayla's medicine was laced with poison. *That* is when Steve kidnapped her from the Deveraux mansion, and took her to an ISA safehouse (not his place, where Kayla would have been found quickly). Anyway, he knew when he kidnapped her that she had been poisoned. Marcus came into the picture when Steve was trying to get a hold of some antidote for Kayla. Alice was already helping Steve with this; Marcus did come in to help Steve care for Kayla after they had the antidote.
Before collapsing, Kayla went to the Deveraux mansion and suddenly realized that Steve's story about the poisoning was true--it all made sense to her by then. Still weak, she got to the pier and tried to call her brother Roman (from a pay phone) and collapsed. She was found by quirky/nutty Professor Schenkel. The professor (whom Carrie and Jonah believed to be an "alien") took care of Kayla in his home and protected her fiercely, not letting anyone know about her. When Kayla went missing, Steve was desperate to find her before anyone else hurt her again. Marcus helped Steve find her (they put two and two together when they heard Jonah and Carrie talking about the professor and some mysterious guest he had). Despite the best of care at the professor's house, Kayla had developed an infection/high fever and Marcus helped giving Steve directions/moral support in caring for her.
When Steve saved her life and cared for her after the poisoning(months into her marriage with Jack), Kayla realized he still loved her just as much as she still loved him. Rather than return to Salem after being poisoned, Kayla wanted to run off to Los Angeles. In order to stop Kayla from leaving, Steve finally was forced to tell her why he pushed her towards Jack: he wanted to save his brother, Billy...and he thought Kayla would have a good life with him. After telling him off, Kayla forgave Steve because of his reasons, and she wanted to immediately end her marriage to Jack. However, Jack was in the middle of a political campaign and Steve worried this would create a scandal that would be very bad for Jack at that point. Kayla very reluctantly agreed that, just for a little while, they would keep their reunion a secret; the plan was that as soon as the election was over she would immediately file for divorce from Jack.
The Rape
Jack was anxious to make love to his new bride, now that neither of them were sick or dying. They moved into Kayla's loft apartment, but even then, Kayla put Jack off, by feigning exhaustion or any excuse she could think of. Jack was also busy running a state assembly campaign.
On New Year's Eve, there was a
celebration at the Deveraux's. By now, Harper realized that
it was not Kayla who had taken Jack's adoption papers, but
Melissa Horton, who was in love with Jack. Harper framed
Melissa for Kayla's poisoning. While the police were busy
arresting Melissa, at the party, Patch and Kayla were on the
grounds, spending time together. Unfortunately, a reporter
was watching them, and took pictures.

Election night, Jack won the assembly
seat. There was a celebration on the docks and during the
hoopla, the reporter handed Jack an envelope filled with
pictures of Patch and Kayla together, and not just from the
New Year's party either.

Meanwhile, Patch and Kayla agreed that tonight, would also be the night that Kayla was honest with Jack, and told him that she was leaving him for Patch. Patch was a very happy man that night, thinking that tomorrow, he and Kayla would finally be together at last.
But Kayla had no idea what she was
walking in to, as Jack locked the door to the loft when they
returned home. It was not long until he tried to become
intimate with her. When Kayla once again, nervously rebuffed
his advances, Jack then produced the pictures of her and
Patch together.

Kayla sensed things were about to get
of control, and tried to explain the pictures. Jack told her
that for months, Kayla told him she wasn't ready to make
love with him. He then asked her if she would ever be ready?
Kayla didn't say anything, so Jack answered for her. He told
her, 'no, but that HE was ready to make love to her that
night'. Jack then pushed her down onto the couch and raped
her, while the song, 'The Rose' played in the
background.

While this was happening, a very
unaware Patch, and his good friend, Dr. Marcus Hunter, were
singing 'The Rose' on the docks, while Patch played his
harmonica.

Afterwards, Kayla flinched as Jack
tried to touch her shoulder. He then picked up a rose out of
a vase, and told her that he knew there was no point in
trying to get her to understand, how it's been for him. That
he was so happy the day they got married and that he was
anxious to show her that he wasn't 'half a man'. That he
could make love to her in every sense of the
word. Jack saw that Kayla was angry and in
some kind of shock. He told her he had never intended for it
to be like that between them, but that she had to take some
of the blame too! Kayla then looked at him, as Jack told her
that he believed all of her excuses about why they couldn't
make love, because he had loved her, and he wanted to be
noble and patient for Kayla to finally be ready. Jack then told her if Kayla had loved
him as honestly as he did her, the rape would've never
happened. Kayla finally found her voice and asked him if he
really believed that his raping her was HER fault? Jack
didn't like the 'R' word, and shook his head, saying what
happened between them was not rape! Kayla responded by
telling him it didn't matter if they were married or not.
His forcing her to have sex was rape. Jack then complained about all of the
times she lied to him, again. Kayla responded that she saved
his life and that should've been enough. Kayla then tried to
move past him to get up the stairs, but Jack grabbed her
arm. Kayla snatched it back, and told Jack never to touch
her again!

Kayla tearfully took a shower, as Jack apologized outside of the door. Kayla cried even harder. Afterwards, Kayla got dressed and told Jack she was going to see Steve. Jack told her if she went out of that door, he would make her and Steve sorrier than they had ever been. Kayla left anyway and Jack called Victor Kiriakis.
Jack had some of Victor's thugs rough up Patch. Kayla and Marcus found him, and Kayla suspected that Jack was involved, since he did make that threat. Kayla stayed with him and nursed him back to health, not telling him about the rape, although she did finally tell him that Jack was behind his beating.
By then, Patch suspected that Kayla was keeping something from him, but couldn't fathom what. He was also forced to look at Jack through different eyes, after the beating, and his all around general demeanor of not wanting to let Kayla go.
Patch and Kayla decided to go to a snowy, cabin getaway, for some time alone. They were unaware of the fact that Jack, and some thug he had hired, were looking for them. Kayla was still too traumatized to make love with Patch, although she did accept his marriage proposal. Later that night, she asked if Patch would just hold her. Patch sensed something was amiss, but held his tongue, holding her through the night.
The next morning, while Kayla was
asleep, Patch sat up next to her, still staring down at her
and wondering what was wrong. As he rubbed her shoulder,
part of her nightgown came down, and he saw her bruises. At
that moment, Kayla awoke and smiled at him, unaware of what
he had just seen. Steve demanded to know where those bruises
came from, but Kayla fluffed them off. Steve didn't buy that
and wanted to know what happened, and who did this to
her?

Kayla was finally forced to admit that
Jack raped her on the night of the election. At first, Patch
was angry that Kayla had not told him about this before. He
jumped up and began getting dressed to go back to Salem and
confront Jack. But Kayla stopped him, and the two comforted
one another.

Jack discovered where Patch and
Kayla were, and went up to the cabin with some hired thugs.
The thugs tried to kill Patch out in the snow. After they
beat him up, they threw him in a ditch and left him there to
die. In the meantime, Jack forced Kayla to return to Salem
with him. Eventually Marcus just happened to see Steve as he
finally made it out onto the road. He took him back to
Salem

Meanwhile, Kayla was being held hostage in the loft apartment. Jack would not allow her to leave or use the phone to call for help. But she could go with him to make public appearances. If she tried to leave the apartment, there would be a guard blocking her way. Kayla also slept in another, locked bedroom.
Finally, one night, she went up to the
roof and found Patch there, waiting for her. They embraced,
just as Jack came up on the roof and found them.

Jack and Patch began fighting and Jack
was knocked off of the roof.

Jack was rushed to the hospital, where it was revealed that Jack needed a kidney transplant. Patch offered his kidney and the doctors were stumped by the fact that it was a perfect match. Jack did not want a kidney from Steve, but ended up taking it anyway. The operation was a success, but it was not the end of Jack's harassment of Patch and Kayla.
