Prologue

Emma Marshall was the presumed-dead wife of Shane Donovan. She reappeared in 1985 during the Dragon storyline in England. Emma seemed to be drugged or under a hypnotic spell; she didn't recognize Shane and constantly repeated that she needed to carry out her "duty." Kimberly was suspicious about the fact that Emma had reappeared at the same time that the Dragon was trying to kill Lady Joanna, and deduced that the two events were connected. Eventually, Shane got through to Emma and took her back to his home. Kimberly was unsure about where she stood with Shane, especially when he saw her taking care of the fragile Emma. Kimberly also realized that the dress she wore to the ball had belonged to Emma and felt humiliated for not having been told the truth. Shane apologized to Kim and let her know that nothing had changed; he still loved her. Soon after this, Bo captured the Dragon and he was sent to prison. As a reward, the royal family rewarded Bo and Hope with a wedding. Kimberly and Shane attended the wedding while leaving Emma at home to recover. But as the wedding ended, Emma appeared a the church brandishing a gun. Still under a post-hypnotic suggestion implanted by the Dragon, she was about to kill Bo and Hope. Luckily, Shane subdued his wife. Again, he doted over her, leaving Kimberly shaken. As a result, Kimberly's bouts of blindness worsened. After this, Kimberly decided to return to Salem alone to let Shane and Emma work everything out. Emma knew that Shane and Kim were involved and subtly let Kimberly know that she wasn't willing to give up Shane. Despite Shane's protests, Kimberly returned to Salem.

Convinced that there was no hope for her and Shane, Kimberly stressed even more, and became almost totally blind. However, she refused to let anyone know of her condition, especially Shane, who continued to call and try to talk to her. Shane eventually returned to Salem with Emma, but sought Kim out anyway. Pretending she could see, Kim met with Shane and told him to stay with Emma and leave her alone. After that, Kimberly and Neil travelled to Cleveland to see an eyesight specialist. She was given the terrible news that she would be blind indefinitely. After this, Kimberly decided to tell her family about her condition. However, she continued to hide it from Shane. He finally discovered her secret when he visited her and she thought he was Neil. Nevertheless, the fact remained that Shane was a married man. Although he pledged his love for Kimberly, she couldn't ignore his marriage to Emma and pushed him away. Meanwhile, Emma got continously more jealous of Shane's love for Kimberly. Her jealousy finally exploded one day when she visited Kimberly to tell her that she was an obstacle in her marriage to Shane. During their fierce argument, the once-fragile Emma spotted Shane's cameo and decided to take it from Kimberly, since Shane had originally given it to her. When Kimberly demanded Emma to return the cameo, a furious Emma threw it against a window, breaking the glass. She then told a blind Kimberly to find the cameo, and proceeded to take it with her. The cameo meant so much to Kimberly that she got on her hands and knees and searched for it through the broken glass. Shane eventually found the cameo in Emma's possession and returned it to Kim as a sign that he still loved her.

Shane and Kimberly Brady were now a serious couple and were planning to marry. Emma did everything she could to break up the pair. After bothering Kim and Shane repeatedly for more than a year, Emma finally got her ultimate revenge when she kidnapped Kim and Shane's newborn son, Andrew, from University Hospital soon after his birth in 1986. While Kim and Shane knew Emma was responsible for kidnapping and then selling their son on the black market, they could never trace the whereabouts of their son (who at the time was believed to be the son of Kim and Victor Kiriakis). Actually, the child had been adopted by Paul and Barbara Stewart, who happened to live just outside of Salem.

The Murder

New Year's Eve night, 1986, Neil Curtis held a party at his home and invited nearly everyone in Salem. That evening, Kimberly and Emma had a fight. Kim was convinced she could get the truth out of Emma about Andrew. Emma wouldn't reveal anything about Andrew's whereabouts. Kim stormed out, thinking she'd never seen her son again. Later that evening, Emma was found dead in Neil's study.

The Investigation

After Emma is found, Abe spends hours questioning everyone at the party. After Shane takes Kim home from the New Year's Eve party, they decide to question Alex Marshall about Andrew. They find Victor Kiriakis there already, grilling Marshall. They still haven't gotten any answers when Abe arrives and announces that he thinks Emma was murdered. Abe mentions that Emma planned to take him out of her will. Shane starts to think of all the things he found that lead him to believe Kim killed Emma. Shane tries to get Kimberly to admit she had an encounter with Emma, but Ms. Brady refuses. Before Shane leaves, he gets a sample of Kim's hair.

Neil later goes to see Kim and tells her he won't tell Abe anything about her, as Kim tells him she didn't kill Emma. Shane matches the hair in Emma's hand to Kim's. Shane explains that he found a lock of hair in Emma's clenched fist. Kim tries to deny it, but Shane has proof. Before Kimberly can say anything, Abe enters to question her.

After Abe leaves, Kim confesses that she did have a confrontation with Emma right before she died. They struggled and fought, but Kimberly swears that when she left Emma, Ms. Marshall was still alive. Shane believes her and promises to prove her innocence. Meanwhile, Bo catches Kiriakis destroying his files on Emma. Victor confesses that if the police found the files, it would look bad for him--even though he didn't kill Emma.

Abe questions Shane about Emma's last days. Donovan tells the detective that Emma was at his place for dinner the night before she died, but fails to mention Kimberly's fake attempt to shoot her. Later, Shane questions Kimberly about the dirt he took off the windowsill, but Kim has no idea how it got there. She realizes how far out on a limb Shane is going for her, but they avoid getting too personal.

An arrest is made

Abe searches Shane's, Alex's and Kiriakis' houses for any evidence which might implicate one of them in Emma's murder. However, he finds nothing Then, Abe shows up at Kim's apartment with a warrant. During the search, Carver comes up with a vial of liquid. He takes it to the lab to have it analyzed. When the results are in, Kimberly is arrested and charged with Emma's murder! The vial contained Amitriptyline, which is the drug that was found in Emma's system.

Spending time in jail

At the police station, Kim calls Chris and he agrees to serve as her lawyer. Meanwhile, Abe refuses to allow anyone to see her until the preliminary questioning is completed. This news doesn't sit well with Shane. He's worried about the coverups they concocted after Kim's last encounter with Emma. While Shane's wheels turn, Chris has a conference with his client. He believes he can clear Kim if she tells him everything that happened on the night Emma died - without leaving out any details. However, Kim opts for a less incriminating version of the events.

Later, Shane sneaks in to see her and advises her to tell the truth, no matter how bad it sounds. When the lab finds traces of Kim's skin under Emma's fingernails, Ms. Brady confesses everything. "We struggled, but I didn't kill her," Kim protests. Roman believes his sister and promises to stand by her.

Preliminary Hearing

At the preliminary hearing, Alex shocks everyone by testifying that Kim tried to kill Emma once before. Then Shane takes the stand and tries to explain it was just a setup to trick Emma, but Leslie Landman, the prosecuting attorney, accuses him of being so in love with Kimberly that he'd lie to protect her! The outcome: Ms. Brady is charged with murder in the first degree!

Getting on with her life

Kim gets out on bail and decides the best way to spend her time as she awaits trial is to stay busy with work. Kim decides to go back to work at the clinic and get her life in order. But at the hospital, she runs into trouble. One of her patients, Kelly (played by Vanessa Nichols, daughter of Stephen Nichols, who played Steve Johnson), has been forbidden to talk to Kimberly -- "the murderess." Kim tries to work, but her appointments don't show up. Reluctantly, Tom tells Ms. Brady that he has been forced to suspend her from the clinic. Paul takes Kim to Blondie's and people point and say cruel things to her. However, Shane comes to the rescue, making Kim see that she has to be strong and not let this get the best of her. He takes her out on the dance floor in front of everyone.

Kimberly and Barbara meet up at the clinic and Kim mentions her son. Like any proud mother, she has several pictures of her son on hand and she shows the pictures to Barbara. Mrs. Stewart realizes her son, Teddy, is actually's Kimberly's son, Andrew.

Later, Kimberly stops by to see Caroline but her mother has to tell her that she and Max can't have any kind of contact with each other until the trial is over. If they do, social services department will take Max and Frankie away. Kim goes home, upset, and finds that her apartment has been ransacked and the word "Murderer" painted on the wall. Shane comes over and sees it and is infuriated. He summons Abe who sees the pain Kim is going through and feels terrible.

More investigating

Shane and Kimberly decide to go back to the Curtis mansion looking for clues they might have missed. while they are there, the stable boy informs Shane that he saw Kim outside the study window on the night that Emma was murdered. However, he has not been questioned and he informs the couple that he will not offer information on his own. Shane continues to ask Kim about New Year's Eve, but she breaks down, telling Shane she needs to rest. He suggest they have dinner, and Shane cooks a wonderful meal. They enjoy being together, but the sexual tension between them surfaces.

Kim has a nightmare about Emma, and Shane wakes her and tries to comfort her, when Gillian comes in. Steve and Kayla make plans to pick up where they left off. Adrienne talks to Kayla about Steve. Alex tells Shane and Kim that Emma had a videotaped will. In the videotape, Emma says she took Andrew, and knows where he is, but teases them and won't say where. Shane tries to comfort Kim as he holds her close.

Paul gets teddy dressed to take him to work with him, but Barbara comes up with another excuse. Kim is reading a book of poetry when Shane comes in. he tries to get Kim to remember anything that might of been out of the ordinary that night. Shane watches as Kim talks to Neil and continues to fight her feelings for Shane.

Meanwhile, Alex comes to Leslie with a copy of Emma's will, hoping they can use it in their case against Kimberly. But Mickey reminds Leslie that the evidence is only circumstantial. Mickey suggests they plea bargain to get the charge dropped to second degree murder and ask Kim to plead guilty. Shane talks Kim out of it. Later, at Shenanigans, Kim overhears Leslie saying she is going to see that Kimberly goes to jail for life for what she's done. Kim gets upset, runs out, and asks Gillian if she'll help her run away. But Shane convinces Kim there are "a thousand reasons she should stay." He demonstrates by giving her a passionate kiss!

Kim and Shane go over that night again, when she remembers hearing one of the horses stirring up. Kim and Shane have a beautiful dinner they made together. they later share a tender moment thinking of Andrew. When Kim falls asleep he picks her up and carries her upstairs. Kim has another dream and Shane goes to her.

The trial begins

roman tells Alex off about Kim and Shane and the newspaper article. Shane and Kim kiss, but are interrupted by Chris who shows them the article and tells Kim she needs to move out. Kim decides to move out, but Shane isn't convinced this is the right thing to do. Shane brings Kim back to her apartment. Kim tries to talk down what happened between her and Shane, and he agrees, nothing has changed.

Shane sneaks in to see Kim, who is a nervous wreck. he tries to comfort her before she heads to court. Paul tells Barbara he is going to the trial to support Kim. Gillian arranges a meeting between Shane and Kim in the park.

Shane gives Kim a locket with a picture of Andrew.

Evidence continues mounting against Kim. As a person who worked in a hospital, it's revealed that she had access to drugs and syringes. She had even been trained to use a syringe when she worked with her friend, Neil's daughter. On more than one occasion, she had administered insulin to Noelle, using a syringe.

Barbara gets upset with Paul, as Kim overhears. Kim tries to play peacemaker, to no avail. Shane talks to a nurse, Vicki Jarvis, who worked at the hospital. Kim overhears Shane and Chris arguing about her, and she breaks them up, as she and Shane grow closer again.

Shane tells Kim and Chris he can't find the nurse that Alex paid off, so Chris plans to impeach Alex's testimony. roman and Abe argue about the stain he found on the carpet in Neil's study. Vicki Jarvis, the nurse, comes into the court room and tells all about Alex hiring her to get the drug that killed Emma.

A verdict

Kim is found guilty on February 16, 1987, as she and Shane stare at each other in disbelief. she is then taken away in handcuffs. Shane goes up to her, but is speechless, and tells Kim not to give up. Shane arranges for Kim to be released until the next day and takes her home to his house. Shane brings Kim home and they talk for a bit, but she wants to leave. Chris discusses the case with Leslie. Bo tells hope and Neil about Kim. Shane tells Kim they need this time together, and they share a tender bittersweet reunion. He gives her the engagement ring back and asks her to marry him.

Shane watches Kim sleep, as she wakes up and they discuss what is about to happen. Shane tries to keep Kim strong, as they get ready for court. Kim is sentenced to life in jail. Kim is taken back to prison and is stripped of her belongings. Shane talks to Gillian about letting Kim down, but he's not done he swears. Kim returns to see Shane one last time in the warden's office, now dressed in her prison blues. As Kim is taken away, she tells Shane she'll always love him.

Shane reassures Kim he will get her out of this as they share one more tender moment. Kim chooses to keep her engagement ring around her neck, but the warden explains to Kim how things work inside. Kim gives Shane the ring back to hold. they share a final good-bye, as Shane says he'll be back soon to take her home.

Barbara's involvement

Shane learns that Barbara went to visit Emma at the sanitarium. Neil talks to Barbara and Paul about meeting teddy, and about Kim's appeal. Barbara acts strangely when Paul says the real killer will be revealed. Shane talks to Paul discreetly about Barbara. Shane talks to Gillian about his theory, but can't figure out a motive for Barbara to kill Emma.

Shane checks the airline schedules to see if Barbara could have gotten back the night Emma was killed. Barbara goes to see Kim. Barbara talks to Kim about what is happening in her case. Shane decides to sneak a picture of Barbara to follow up his hunch. Neil goes to see Kim and tries to keep her spirits up.

Shane and Gillian try to figure out the connection between Barbara and Emma. Kim runs into someone roman put in jail and faces numerous problems in dealing with fellow inmates. the warden tells Kim she's working on a transfer for her, but to watch her back.

Shane never lets it rest, knowing the killer is out there. He discovers that Paul's son looks a whole lot like baby Andrew, and he tells Paul he'd love to meet the young boy one day soon, since Kimberly had told him so much about the tyke. Barbara Stewart knows that Andrew (Teddy as they call him) was illegally adopted through Emma, but Paul has no idea that there was anything illegal about the adoption. Barbara continues to avoid Kim and Shane, even though Paul tries to have them meet his son on many occasions. Paul and Barbara take teddy to the pier, but she acts weird when he wants to take him to the hospital when he's working.

Shane started putting the pieces together. Kimberly told him that the Stewart's son, Teddy, was adopted. Shane also discovered that Emma had been visited by someone named Barbara. For some strange reason Kim had never met Teddy. She had begun to think he didn't exist. Shane met up with Paul and asked to see a picture of the boy. It was an old picture according to Paul, but it gave Shane some much needed info.

As Kimberly remained in jail, Shane continued to search for their son. When he happened to show this picture of Andrew to Paul Stewart, Paul had a strange reaction. He recognized Andrew as his young son, Teddy.

Barb becomes desperate

Barb becomes certain that Kim and Shane know about her son's identity. She decides her only hope to keep her child is to flee Salem with him. She packs up their things and they head out of town by car. Shane and roman wonder what's keeping Barbara as Paul gets worried. Kim has a nightmare. The car crashes and flips over and they end up in the hospital. Paul learns of the accident, as Shane and Roman head to the hospital with him. Andrew has only a few cuts and scratches, but Barbara is critically injured. Kim hears about Barbara on the radio. Mike and robin tell Paul Barbara is bad off, and it doesn't look like she will make it, but teddy is fine. Neil sees teddy and asks Shane if he is seeing things, but Shane tells him he is Andrew. Paul hands teddy to Shane, as he goes to see Barbara. Barbara tells Paul she needs to talk to Shane. Shane sees Andrew for the first time in months, as Paul takes him, not knowing yet. She confesses to Shane that her son is actually Kimberly's son, Andrew. Paul tells Shane she doesn't know what she's saying, but in his heart, he knows it must be true. Just before she dies on March 2, Barbara confesses to Shane and Abe that she tried to kill Emma. This deathbed confession gets Kim out of prison.

Paul took Teddy into Barbara's room just after she died.

Kim is released

Shane heads to the prison to tell Kimberly the good news, but the warden says all of the prisoners are asleep for the evening and he will have to wait until the morning to talk to Kimberly. Shane refuses to leave and decides to spend the evening in the warden's office.

The next day, Shane takes Kim away from prison and they head to the hospital to pick up Andrew. Paul has already checked the tyke out from the hospital and taken him home. Meanwhile, Hope plans a surprise party at Shane's to celebrate the return of Kim's son and her release from prison. Kim worries that Paul has run off with Andrew, but Shane assures her they will get him.

Steve and Kayla get romantic when they are interrupted by the phone. Everyone gathers at Shane's. Kim and Shane go to Paul's, and he acts coldly towards them, and says he's not letting anyone take his son, and if they want to see him they will have to get a court order.

Paul told "Teddy," "No one is ever going to take you away from me." We then saw Andrew and Paul leave their house with a suitcase, so we assumed they were headed out of town.

Kim and Shane, devastated, return to Shane's house and are even more saddened when they realize that the family is waiting to surprise them to celebrate their news. Kim runs into her mother's arms, crying that she can't get her baby back.

After the family leaves Shane's, Kim and Shane spend some alone time together on the couch when the doorbell rings. Shane says he'll get rid of whomever it is, but opens the door to find Paul with Andrew in his arms.

He was headed out of town with the baby, but decided he just couldn't do it. Paul gave Andrew one last kiss, then handed him over to Shane. Kimberly was in the next room and had no idea who had just arrived at the door.

As a distraught Kimberly turned around to see who was at the door, this was the first sight she saw--her son and his father {Shane, Charles Shaugnessy} reunited at last.

Shane takes the boy and brings him into Kimberly, who sobs in celebration of holding her son.

The investigation isn't over

Kim and Shane get to celebrate for real when the family throws a party for them at Blondie's. Andrew is having a rough time adjusting to his new home, so Kim and Shane decide it's best if Paul comes with them to the party in order to comfort Andrew.

Andrew was looking sad when Paul first arrived. He was soon happy to see his former dad again.

It made Kim and Shane very uneasy that Andrew was miserable with them and so happy with Paul. He was the only one who could quiet Andrew down, so he offered to stay with Andrew while Kim and Shane went to their party. Paul ended up tagging along, so he was there if Andrew needed him.

The couple shares a dance to "Friends and Lovers" as much of Salem looks on. They finally seem to be a happy family.

Andrew continues to have difficulty adjusting. After taking him to see Neil, the doctor suggests that maybe Kim and Andrew should move in with Paul in order to ease the transition for the boy. Paul is elated and tells Kim he has lots of room. They decide to have dinner together at Paul's and Kim decides to move in with Paul, for her son.

Kim soon begins receiving death threats. Shane's home is ransacked and Gillian is found tied up. Although Kim is ready to return home, they decided it's not safe for her, so she stays with Paul and Andrew at Paul's house in Brookville.

Gillian, Shane's ISA partner, begins acting strangely. She lives in the guest house on Shane's property and he has numerous run-ins with her there, where things just don't seem right. He refers to cases and she doesn't seem to know anything about them. He discusses their recent conversations and she seems confused about what he's talking about.

We soon see that Gillian is not living in the house alone. Her identical twin sister, Grace, is living there too. One night, one of the twins takes a message to Shane's house and slips it under the door. Upon her return, Gillian and Grace discuss her "mission."

"Mission accomplished...now let's see what happens next."
"Oh Grace, I couldn't have done this without you," replies Gillian.
"Gillian are you sure all of this is absolutely necessary?"
"I am absolutely certain," says Gillian, with a mischievous smile on her face.

One day, Shane and Gillian decide to go horseback riding in order to relieve tension. They head to the Curtis stables. While Shane and Gillian are talking, Brad, the stable boy, enters. He asks "Ms. Brady" how she is doing. Gillian turns around and Brad realizes the woman with Shane isn't Kimberly. At this point, Shane begins to put all of the pieces together.

Shane flashes to the interview with Brad when he said he saw Kim leaving the Curtis house. Then Shane remembers a conversation with Abe and Gillian where they talk about the "old ISA trick" of lifting fingerprints. He realizes Kim was set up and says, "I think I just found Emma's murderer."

Gillian is totally unaware that Shane is on to her. They return from horseback riding and Gillian exclaims, "Oh Shane, it's been such a long time since I spent the whole afternoon horseback riding." Shane quickly gets rid of Gillian and begins to investigate his latest conclusions.

Gillian is a murderer

Through further conversations between Grace and Gillian, it is revealed that Grace took Gillian's place on New Year's Eve at the party. Grace knows Gillian took care of business that evening, but has no idea that she was murdering Emma.

Shane decides it's time to set a trap for Gillian. Kim and Shane meet in the cave below Shenanigan's and Shane tells her of his plan. Shane begins to cozy up to Gillian, in order to get her to reveal information about Emma's murder. Kim must do the same with Paul, so Gillian thinks she can have Shane to herself.

A simple kiss in public and a few kind gestures won't be convincing enough. Eventually Shane decides, against Kim's better judgment, that they must each marry. Kim plans to wed Paul while Shane proposes to Gillian. Kim and Paul are wed in a simple ceremony at Blondie's and plans are made for Gillian and Shane's wedding.

Shane meets Grace

Grace, afraid her sister has become crazy, goes to Shane and asks him to help her take care of Gillian. Shane enlists Grace's help and Grace calls Gillian with the ending of her novel, which up to this point, has roughly followed the story of Gillian, Kim, Shane and Emma. Grace tells Gillian that her heroine will kill her enemy by luring her into a confrontation and then messing with the brakes in her car.

Gillian decides this is the best way to get Kimberly out of her life. She lures Kim up to a cabin and Kim gets a full confession from her, but Gillian believes she has the ultimate revenge. Believing Grace's book ending doesn't have quite enough of an ending, Gillian not only cuts the brakes to Kim's convertible, but she also places a bomb in the car.

Shane and Gillian wed

Gillian plants the bomb and then leaves Kim via helicopter, racing off to her wedding. Kim gets into the car and drives it off a cliff, where the car explodes. Kim appears to be dead. Shane and Gillian get down the aisle, but Kim reappears just in time to give an objection to the marriage. Gillian pulls a gun, but Roman and Shane subdue her and she is arrested.

The conclusions

Shane discovers that in her death bed confession, Barb didn't get to reveal that she intended to kill Emma, but never got to. Emma was dead when she found her.

Abe and Roman had helped Shane with the car, replacing Kim with a dummy, just before the car drove off the cliff.

And another wedding

Kim and Shane again declare their love for one another and Shane asks Kim to marry him tonight. She doesn't think anything is ready for such a hasty wedding, but Shane has been prepared. He has everything ready...bridesmaid dresses, a wedding dress, flowers, and much more.

The pair marries that night after tracking down all of their family and substituting a bridesmaid and a groomsman (Bo and Hope had just left town). They head off on their honeymoon via the Orient Express.

A side note...
Camilla More (who previously played Gillian) takes over her sister's role of Grace and stays on the show until she's killed by the Riverfront Knifer.
