After being presumed dead in the Korean War in 1953, Tommy Horton
returned to his hometown. He had lost his memory, and due to war
injuries, had plastic surgery that altered his face. He returned to
Salem with his brother, whom he had met in a quiet little town where
Bill had taken refuge. Tommy, who called himself Mark Brooks, was a
doctor, and he soon accepted a position at University Hospital. His
younger sister, Marie, became his research assistant. They, of
course, fell in love. After it was revealed that he was her brother,
Marie was distraught and decided to take a break from men, eventually
joining a convent.

Bo bursts into the church where Hope is about to marry the evil Larry Welch. Bo exclaims, "I'm here to take the woman I love!" He takes her away on his motorcycle while the song "Holding Out for a Hero" is heard. Meanwhile, Howie Hoffsteder is dressed up in a wedding gown and veil, pretending to be Hope walking down the aisle. Larry lifts the veil of his soon to be wife and finds Howie smoking a cigar.

John and Marlena were on the run in West Virginia, and were being chased by the KGB and Bo, Hope, and Shane (they were trying to rescue Marlena from John.) At one point, Marlena saw Bo and screamed for help because she thought John was Stefano. The chase went to the river, and Bo lost John and Marlena because he had to save Hope, who'd fallen off of the raft. The river in the story is supposed to be in West Virginia. But the actual location shoot took place in the Kern River State Park in California.

Looking for the missing treasury bonds, many Salemites head to Stockholm. It is John Black who remembers where the bonds are hidden. It is in Stockholm where Steve again sees his former lover, Britta Englund. The story is supposed to be set in Stockholm, but it was actually shot on the Universal Studios Back Lot in a section called "Little Europe".

After finding out that Jack was his brother, Steve felt that it
was only fair that he let his sickly younger brother have his love,
Kayla. Jack and Steve got into a fight over Kayla on the roof of the
loft and Jack's kidney was injured. Steve, knowing it was his fault,
donated a kidney to his brother. During his surgery, Steve almost
died, and had an "out of body experience." In the dream, he imagined
his life with Kayla as an old man, among other things. This picture
is the two of them as they appeared in that dream.

Steve and Kayla found a diary from the Civil War era in their
house. It belonged to Emily, whose lover was Gideon. Steve and Kayla
read the diary and the scenes that were described were acted out in
fantasies by Steve and Kayla, including Emily and Gideon's
wedding.

In the middle of Kayla's trial for murdering Marina Toscano, she goes into labor. She later gives birth to Stephanie at University Hospital. Steve's life is changed forever.

Jack and Jennifer were in New York, because she was masquerading
as Katerina vonLeuschner. Jack was impersonating the wife of Werner
Bayer, the representative of the von Leuschner family trying to find
Katerina, and therefore also responsible for transforming Jennifer
into Katerina. Jack found the hotel in New York where they were
staying, and by eavesdropping, found out that Mr. Bayer was expecting
his wife to join him. So naturally he dressed up as Mrs. Bayer in a
wonderfully gaudy dress in order to get past the hotel staff.

Jennifer was about to marry Emilio Ramirez, who she never really loved. Jack had fallen in love with her, after working closely with her at the Spectator, but he would not admit it. Jennifer finally accepted Emilio's proposal when she grew sick of Jack's schemes. Jack, with Vern's help, arranged to steal Jennifer from the wedding by creating a false fire alarm. Jack took Jennifer away in a fireman's outfit, on a firetruck, with the music "Rescue Me" playing as they drove around the city of Salem.

It was a night that changed many lives in Salem. Soon after Carrie
was announced as the "Face of the 90s" of Bella magazine, she had
acid thrown in her face by one of Austin's enemies, burning her face
and requiring many subsequent surgeries. That same night, Marlena and
John succumbed to their passion on the Titan conference room table.
Sami watched them make love and was haunted by the scene, later
causing her to become bulimic, and even kidnap her baby sister.

After most of Salem traveled to Aremid, the town where Peter and
Kristen grew up, many secrets were uncovered. The Lady in White was
still living in the Blake house, roaming around, constantly crying.
The Salemites brought her home and began to care for her. The woman
finally decided that it was better for her secrets to be kept
forever, so she jumped off the pier. Peter and Jack rescued her and
it was revealed that she was Peter and Kristen's mother.

In Stefano's never-ending desire to have Marlena all to himself,
he kidnapped her once again and took her to Paris. There he had a
gold cage built for her that put her in the height of luxury, with
beautiful clothes, gorgeous furniture, and lots of pampering from his
assistants. However, Marlena didn't care about any of these extras.
She wanted to be back home with her family. After John discovered the
virtual reality goggles and located Marlena, he went to Paris and
saved her.

After Marlena was confined to a cage by Stefano for months in
Paris, John realized where she was being held and he went to rescue
her. Unfortunately, Stefano was prepared for John's arrival. He
decided that John should be exectuted and he put John into a
guillotine. With John in the guillotine, Marlena pledged her love for
him. John was eventually saved by Vivian and Ivan.
