Kitty
Horton was the malicious wife of Dr. Tommy Horton, and mother of
Sandy Horton. Having married Tommy in 1953 before he left for Korea,
and then losing him, drove Kitty to do anything to be able to provide
for their daughter Sandy. When Tommy came back to Salem, he found
that Kitty had become an entirely different woman.
In 1967, Kitty returned to Salem after receiving the news that her dead husband Tommy was actually alive. After a lackluster reunion, they tried to make their marriage work. However, Kitty also embarked on an affair with Dr. Elliot Kincaid.
Tommy
discerned something odd about Kitty's behavior, and decided to have
her investigated. His private eye followed her and discovered that
Kitty was sleeping with Elliot Kincaid. Meanwhile, Kitty received an
invitation from Elliot to come to his apartment. She was mortified
when she got there...and found Tommy waiting for her. Cornered, Kitty
did the only thing she knew -- scheme her way out. As Tommy berated
her, Kitty pretended to have sharp chest pains. Tommy, knowing that
Kitty suffered from heart problems, rushed her to the hospital. She
"miraculously" recovered.
Yet, Tommy could not trust Kitty. He decided to see what she had been up to since he became missing. His private detective found out that Kitty had been having affairs with wealthy men all over the country. After confronting Kitty with this information, Tommy divorced her. To add insult to injury, Elliot dumped her.
Kitty was down, but not out. Briefly, she managed to turn Sandy against her father. Meanwhile, she began yet another affair with Peter Larkin. Peter hired Kitty to do some "part-time clerical work" while his wife was out of town.
Kitty hit the jackpot, however, when she took a job as Tom Horton's secretary. She was transcribing audio tapes one evening when she overheard the most interesting conversation on one of them. Accidentally, a conversation had been recorded between Tom and Laura, in which they discussed Michael's parentage, mentioning Bill as the father. Knowing that this tape was worth more than gold, she decided to blackmail Bill and Laura. Bill did not like being manipulated by Kitty, and he visited her at her apartment one evening. A fight over the tape ensued between the two. They struggled for the tape, and Bill finally managed to grab it and left. Shortly thereafter, Kitty suffered a heart attack and died.
Even from the grave, Kitty caused trouble for Bill, as he was charged with her murder. He was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and went to prison for three years.
The character of Kitty Horton was
