Kayla
Brady is the daughter of Shawn and Caroline Brady, the sister of
Roman and Kimberly Brady, half-sister of Bo Brady, and the adoptive
sister of Frankie and Max Brady. She is the mother of Stephanie
Johnson and the ex-wife of Jack Deveraux and Steve
Johnson.
Kayla first
appeared in Salem in December of 1981. A new nurse at University
Hospital, Kayla still lived with her parents and brother Roman near
the riverfront. As the Bradys were old friends of the Hortons, Kayla
knew several of the faces around the hospital, especially paramedic
Mike Horton, whom she knew since childhood. During this time, Mike
was recovering from his broken relationship with Trish Banning and
decided to ask Kayla out. Although Kayla liked Mike, she made it
clear to him that she did not want to be a substitute for Trish. Mike
and Kayla went out on a few dates, but the relationship went nowhere.
Not much later, Mike left Salem to attend college. Meanwhile, Kayla
dedicated herself to bringing her brother Roman and Marlena Evans
together, since the attraction between them was painfully obvious.
When Marlena apparently died at the hands of the Salem Strangler,
Kayla was the only one that was able to help Roman deal with the
situation, showing the strong bond between brother and sister.
Fortunately, Marlena soon turned up alive and well.
During this time, Kayla began dating David Banning. But just as their relationship was getting off the ground, Renée DuMonde began interfering. She began spending time with David whenever possible and making him late for dates with Kayla...and David responded to her! Knowing that she wouldn't be able to hold on to David, Kayla bitterly called it quits with him. An old flame of Kayla's, Tim Casey, annoyingly pursued her for a while but she spurned his advances. However, Eugene Bradford promised her that a better man would soon come along.

One
night, while drowning her sorrows at Shenanigans over her loss of
David, Kayla got extremely drunk. When Chris Kositchek saw her in
that state, he tried to help her by taking her home. However, she
didn't want to go home. Eventually Kayla passed out and Chris took
her to his place. When she finally woke up, Chris explained what had
happened and that he had called her family to tell them that she was
alright. Kayla was deeply thankful to Chris for having helped her
out. For whatever reason, he and Kayla actually clicked. This was the
beginning of a great friendship that would grow into much more. But
just as they were getting to know each other, Kayla nearly died. One
day at the hospital, Kayla drank some funny-tasting coffee delivered
by the hospital's robot. Moments later, she went into convulsions and
finally fell into a coma. When she woke up, Kayla was touched to see
Chris waiting by her bedside promising to help her through her
recovery. Wanting to protect her, Chris arranged to have Kayla
recuperate at his house. During this time, Chris and Kayla admitted
that they cared about each other very much. The relationship
continued, but soon Chris was in danger when he was shot while
chasing Stefano DiMera, whom he held responsible for Kayla's
poisoning. This time it was Kayla's turn at the bedside, and she
admitted her love for Chris. Chris survived the gun shot and it
seemed as though he and Kayla would remain together. However, Kayla
expected a commitment from Chris. He couldn't make such a commitment.
After months of sporadic arguments, Kayla and Chris broke up. Kayla
remained in Salem for a while after the breakup, but ultimately
decided to leave town.
In
May of 1986, Kayla was once again seen, living in Ohio. She was
working for Dr. Dennison there, unaware of the fact that he had
possession of her nephew, Andrew Donovan. After Kayla's apartment was
ransacked (by Patch Johnson), she returned to Salem out of fear for
her safety. One of the first things Kayla did when she returned was
confront Chris. There were a lot of unresolved feelings between the
two of them. Fortunately, they were able to put the past behind them
and remain friends. Meanwhile, she was offered a job at the
Riverfront Emergency Clinic. After thinking about it, Kayla decided
to permanently stay in Salem. Working at the Riverfront, Kayla met
Patch Johnson. She and Steve (Patch's real name) began spending a lot
of time together. Little did she know that Steve was working for
Victor Kiriakis in order to keep tabs on the Bradys. In addition to
helping at the Emergency Center, Kayla also helped runaway boys
Frankie and Max Donner. When social workers decided to take Max away
from Frankie, Max ran away. Steve, who had grown close to Max, blamed
Kayla for his disappearance and remained angry at her until Max
safely turned up.
Kayla and Steve grew closer as he pretended to work for Allied Cargo, a Kiriakis company on the Riverfront. At first, Kayla focused on finding baby Andrew. But soon, Kayla became involved in the search for the elusive Britta Englund. Her newly-returned-from-the-dead brother Roman was looking for Britta because she held the keys to some missing treasury bonds he needed to find. It also happened that her brother Bo and Steve had known Britta in the past. Roman and Steve finally caught up with Britta after a man named Billings died at the Emergency Center. Britta's presence didn't sit too well with Kayla; she could tell that Steve loved Britta and she felt jealous, though she would never admit it. In the end, Britta was found dead and Steve was charged with the crime. Kayla stood by him until his innocence was proven.
Soon after, the search for the treasury bonds led back to Stockholm, where Kayla and the rest dodged KGB spies at every corner. Upon returning to Salem, Kayla was kidnapped by a man named Orpheus. Thanks to Roman and Steve, she was rescued. A month later, Marlena was also kidnapped. The search for her led BACK to Stockholm, so Kayla and the rest went there to save her. Once that was over, they all returned to Salem. Kayla and Steve's Swedish adventures brought them together; and while she would've liked to have admitted her feelings for him, Steve always pulled away. Just as they were finally beginning to make progress, Kayla received a mysterious file. In it, there were documents revealing that Steve had spied on Kayla. She felt betrayed to find out that it was he who had ransacked her apartment in Cleveland, and that he had been working for Victor and Emma Donovan the entire time. Extremely upset, Kayla ended their relationship.
During this time, Kayla, as well as the rest of the Bradys, had learned that Bo was really the son of Victor Kiriakis. As a result of this revelation, Shawn had threatened to divorce Caroline. But Kayla, Roman, and Kimberly's pleas enabled their father to forgive their mother for her affair with Victor.
Steve
wanted to make Kayla understand that things had changed since he had
spied on her, but the fact that he'd worked for Emma really bothered
Kayla, and with good reason. By this time, Shane had begun to suspect
that Emma had kidnapped Andrew, and Kayla was afraid that Steve
might've had something to do with the kidnapping. As the truth of
Andrew's kidnapping came to light, Kayla grew closer to Steve.
Meanwhile, Kayla befriended Adrienne Johnson.
Kayla brought Adrienne into her home after Adrienne's place was broken into. As Steve interacted more Adrienne, he began having odd memories from his childhood. Steve had been raised in an orphanage, and had little recollection of his life before being orphaned. Steve pushed Kayla away while he dealt with his childhood memories. For some time, Steve and Adrienne began having secret conversations and arguments; Kayla began to think that the two had some dark secret. Finally, Kayla figured out that Steve was Adrienne's long-lost older brother by discovering matching pieces of jewelry that had belonged to both their mothers. Adrienne had come to Salem searching for him. Their mother, Jo Johnson, had given up both Steve and his younger brother, Billy, up for adoption to keep them from being abused by their father, Duke Johnson. However, this didn't help Kayla and Steve. Soon after the revelations, Steve convinced his mother to leave Duke, who was still physically abusing her. Soon after, Duke was shot dead, and Steve confessed to the crime. Kayla knew that Patch was innocent, but he was determined to protect the real killer. Steve was freed when Adrienne finally confessed to the crime, having blocked it out of her mind.
Everything
seemed well for Steve and Kayla. One day, a friend of Kayla's showed
up at her doorstep out of the blue. Jack, a man she'd met years ago
on the beaches of Hawaii, appeared and spent the night in her
apartment. The next day, they went to lunch at Shenanigans only to be
seen by Steve, who became extremely jealous. During lunch, Jack
fainted. When taken to the hospital, it was revealed that Jack, whose
last name Kayla had never known, was none other than the son of
senator Harper Deveraux. Furthermore, he had Hodgkin's Disease. Kayla
began to spend more and more time to care for Jack, who was
constantly in and out of the hospital. Meanwhile, Steve took an
undercover job for Shane working for Victor in order to retrieve a
valuable computer disk. While working undercover, Steve was
approached by FBI agent Ed Daniels to help frame the death of senator
Harper Deveraux, who was supposedly in danger from people searching
for the disk. Steve went along with Daniels' plan but ended up
shooting Harper with real bullets! Steve was charged with attempted
murder and was forced to go into hiding. During this time, Kayla got
in contact with Steve and devoted herself to helping clear Steve's
name. For a bit, she begged Jack to help her hide Steve. Once their
cover was blown, Kayla pretended to be kidnapped by Steve and went on
a cross-country adventure to find out who was framing Steve. Steve
and Kayla stole an airplane and crashed it in Colorado, where he blew
it up to fake his and Kayla's deaths. Steve believed that Dr. Simon
Hopkins from University Hospital had something to do with it. He and
Kayla were trying to make their way to Los Angeles to find some
background info on Simon, who had previously worked at CULA
(California University - Los Angeles.) Meanwhile, the Salem PD, the
FBI, and a pony-tailed man named Kai chased Steve and
Kayla.
Somewhere
in Colorado, Steve and Kayla were shocked to meet up with Justin
Kiriakis and Adrienne. They agreed to let Justin and Adrienne come
along. They finally reached CULA and decided to break into the
personnel files to find out more about Simon. They discovered that
Simon had done some controversial research for a company called Kava
Chemical. More shocking was the fact that Harper and Simon had known
each other; in fact, Harper had once presented Simon with a medical
award. This was very puzzling, and the gang decided to break into
Kava Chemical, which sat right in the outskirts of Salem. So, Steve
put everyone on a bus headed for Salem and remained behind. Kayla
wanted to stay with him but he wouldn't hear of it. He only made her
and the others swear to lie about what had happened. Kayla was to
tell the police that Steve had kidnapped her, and that Justin and
Adrienne had managed to save her. Once arrived in Salem, Kayla,
Justin, and Adrienne were bombarded by the press and the police.
Kayla stuck to the story and pretended to hate Steve. However, she
remained worried about him. Finally, he made his way back to Salem
and revealed himself to Kayla. They proceeded to try to break into
Kava Chemical. Kayla and Adrienne tried to seduce the Kava guards,
Art and Gary, so that Justin and Steve could get into the facility.
When they finally did, they discovered that Diana Colville, a
newcomer to Salem whose fiancé James Dixon had been murdered
for the famed computer disk, was a stockholder in the company; her
father Phillip owned the company. What did this all mean? (that's
what the viewers were asking!!) Who knew? and who cared? All anyone
knew was that there was proof enough to clear Steve. He was finally
cleared when Simon was set up by the police and caught trying to
murder Harper himself.
Though Steve's name was cleared, Kayla still had problems. While Steve had been on the run, Kayla had sought much help from Jack, having him hide Steve for some time. Jack had fallen in love with Kayla. And though Kayla cared for Jack, she only loved Steve. Unfortunately, Steve suddenly broke off the relationship without explanation. He claimed he didn't love her. Little did Kayla know that Jack had told Steve to push Kayla away while hiding him. Soon after this, Jack proposed to Kayla.
Kayla
did not want to marry Jack. However, she felt sorry for him. He was
once again in the hospital and was not expected to recover. Also,
Anjelica and Harper Deveraux begged Kayla to give their son what
would probably be his last wish. With all of this pressure, and her
sudden rejection by Steve, Kayla finally accepted the proposal.
Despite everyone's concern, Kayla went through with the
wedding.
Right after getting married, Jack was forced to go back to the hospital, so the marriage remained unconsummated. Meanwhile, Kayla began to feel sick. As Jack recovered from his Hodgkin's Disease, which was going in remission, Kayla began running high fevers and feeling deathly weak. Though she didn't know it, Kayla was slowly being poisoned by Harper Deveraux, who mistakenly believed that she had possession of Jack's adoption papers which affirmed that Jack was the son of Duke and Jo Johnson. Meanwhile, Jack was discharged from the hospital and was intent on helping Kayla recover by taking her on their belated honeymoon in the Caribbean. On their way to the airport, Kayla accidentally left her medicine, the pills Harper was poisoning her with, in the limousine. Without her "medicine," Kayla began feeling better immediately. Because of this, she didn't bother to call the doctor to send another bottle. While on the honeymoon, Jack tried to make love to Kayla several times but she managed to ward him off by claiming to still feel a bit ill. However, she promised that as soon as she felt up to it they would make love. Soon, they returned to Salem.
But
as soon as they returned home, Kayla fell ill once again. Desperate
to help her, Jack had her admitted into the hospital. But Steve, who
all of this was keeping a close eye on Kayla, deduced that someone in
the Deveraux home was trying to kill Kayla and sneaked her out of the
hospital. Out in an ISA safe house, Steve took care of Kayla and she
slowly began to recover. When she finally woke up, Steve told her
about his suspicions but Kayla didn't believe that someone could be
trying to deliberately poison her. While Steve was out getting
medicine for her, Kayla left the house and went down by the pier to
call Roman. Before she could make the call, however, she collapsed.
Kayla was then found by a lunatic man who called himself Professor
Schenkel, who believed her to be the only pure woman he'd ever laid
eyes upon. Schenkel took care of her until, finally, Steve and Marcus
figured out where she was and rescued her. They then secretly took
her back to the safe house house and helped her recover. When she
finally did, she and Steve agreed that someone at the Deveraux's was
poisoning her. Kayla wanted to run away out of town, but Steve
inexplicably wanted her to return to Jack. After blowing up at Steve
for his suggestion, Steve finally admitted to Kayla that he and Jack
were brothers. This fact only made Kayla angrier because she realized
that Steve had forsaken their happiness together to help a brother he
barely knew. After calming down, Kayla agreed to return to Jack but
also expressed her desire to end the marriage now that Jack's illness
was in remission.
Once
better, Kayla returned to Jack and expressed her fears that someone
close to her had been poisoning her. Lab tests run by the police and
ISA confirmed this when traces of the poison Atropine showed up in
Kayla's bloodstream. With no definite suspects, police investigation
into the matter was slow. But fearing for her safety, Kayla convinced
Jack to move out of the Deveraux mansion and into her old loft
apartment. And as usual, she continued to put off Jack's attempts to
make love. Jack's incessant requests to be with Kayla soon got on her
nerves. One particular day at Blondie's, Kayla was outright annoyed
by Jack and lashed out at him. Though she apologized, she attracted
the anger of Jack's friend, Melissa Anderson. Melissa angrily berated
Kayla in front of a lot of people because she felt that she was
mistreating Jack (Melissa was secretly in love with Jack.) Melissa
later apologized to Kayla for her reaction. Meanwhile, Kayla saw
Steve every chance she could. They agreed that they would tell Jack
that she had only married him to help him fight his illness after the
State Assembly election, for which Jack was running, was over. On New
Year's Eve, Kayla sneaked out of the Deveraux's party to see Steve
and they kissed in the stables. Unbeknownst to them, they were
photographed by a tabloid reporter. When Kayla returned to the house,
she was shocked when Jack informed her that they'd discovered who had
tried to poison her: Melissa! After the argument at Blondie's and
several other tips, the police had searched her apartment and found
bottles of Atropine. They'd also caught Melissa trying to burn love
letters she'd written to Jack. They deduced that Melissa had tried to
kill Kayla so that she could have Jack to herself. Kayla refused to
believe all of this but she couldn't get the police to drop the
charges against Melissa.
Kayla
managed to put off Jack's request for intimacy, until finally the
night of the election came. Jack won the seat on the state assembly.
But when he arrived home, he seemed strange. He was profusely happy
and unusually aggressive. When he made one more advance toward Kayla
and she refused, he snapped. Jack was quick to bring out photos that
a reporter had taken of her and Steve on New Year's Eve. Jack had
just been given these photos minutes after winning the election.
Kayla tried to explain the entire situation with Steve but Jack
wouldn't hear of it. He menacingly grabbed Kayla and proceeded to
"take what was his", and raped her.
Following
the rape, Kayla sought Steve but couldn't bring herself to tell him
what happened. She only told Steve that she needed to get away from
Salem. She and Steve then went to a cabin in the mountains, where
Steve proposed to her. There in the snowy woods, Steve and Kayla
married symbolically. That night, Kayla was unable to make love to
Steve. When he saw bruises on Kayla's body and asked her what had
happened, she finally told him that Jack had raped her. Steve vowed
to make Jack pay for doing that to Kayla. But before he could do so,
some men arrived at the cabin and beat Steve senseless. Then Jack
appeared, and threatened to have Steve killed if Kayla ever left the
loft again. Kayla returned to the loft to spare Steve's life and was
kept a virtual hostage. However, one night she managed to meet with
Steve on the rooftop. When Jack found them together, he grabbed
Kayla, saying that she was his. Steve went crazy at that point and
engaged in a brawl with Jack. Though Kayla tried to prevent the fight
from escalating in fury, Steve and Jack fought until Jack fell off
the fire escape and landed on the pavement 3 stories below. Jack
survived the incident but needed a kidney transplant. Kayla tried to
talk Steve out of donating a kidney, but he went ahead with the
surgery to save his brother.
After Steve and Jack recovered from their respective surgeries, Kayla chose to attend rape counseling, to Jack's chagrin. Jack was worried that the rape, which was still a secret, would come out to the public. But not only did Kayla go to rape counseling, she also pressed rape charges against Jack and filed for divorce. A rape hearing was held in which enough evidence was found to put Jack on trial for rape. However, Jack made a plea bargain. He would plead guilty to assault in exchange for a suspended sentence. Kayla wanted to go to trial, but reluctantly agreed to this to forget about the whole thing. Meanwhile, Jack still tried to hold on to her by delaying the divorce proceedings. He also caused problems for Kayla by sabotaging her work with the Riverfront Community Center. Meanwhile, Kayla was able to get the poisoning charges against Melissa dropped.
One
evening while in the basement of her building, Kayla was attacked by
the Riverfront Knife, a serial killer who had been stalking the
streets of the Riverfront for the past few months killing "unclean"
women. During the attack there was an explosion that prevented the
Knifer from killing Kayla. However, the explosion knocked Kayla
unconscious and started a fire. Luckily, Steve arrived in time to get
Kayla out of the burning basement. After being placed in intensive
care, Kayla woke up to find that she was deaf and mute. The explosion
had severely damaged her hearing, and the trauma had also damaged her
vocal chords. As she recovered from the explosion, Kayla learned sign
language to communicate. Working with her through the ordeal, Steve
also learned and encouraged her to have strength and courage.
Kimberly also helped Kayla deal with her loss of hearing. As Kayla
tried to cope with her deafness, Steve once again proposed marriage.
However, she wanted to wait until she regained her hearing.
Meanwhile, she worked with Kimberly to try to remember who the
Riverfront Knifer was, a fact that she'd blocked out of her mind. The
authorities had reason to believe that Jack had been the Knifer, but
Kayla couldn't confirm this. During one session, Kayla finally
remembered and wrote the Knifer's name on paper for Kimberly. But
before Kimberly could call Shane, the Knifer - Harper Deveraux -
showed up. Harper took Kim and Kayla to the rooftop and confessed to
the murders. He also confessed to poisoning Kayla because he
mistakenly believed that she had discovered that Jack was not his son
- a fact that came to light that same day. Now, he wanted to kill
them; Kimberly, for having been a hooker, and Kayla because she'd had
an affair behind Jack's back. Harper equated her actions with those
of a hooker. Harper pushed Kayla off the roof, but she managed to
hang on to the edge. Fortunately, Steve and Shane arrived in time to
save her and subdue Harper. Following the struggle with Harper, Kayla
decided to go through with surgery that would restore her hearing.
The surgery was a success, but Kayla still couldn't speak. Mike
believed that her problem was trauma-induced, and that her speech
could return at any moment. However, this didn't stop Steve from
proposing marriage once again. This time, Kayla accepted.
Feeling
guilty about his father's actions, Jack finally granted Kayla a
divorce. With a clear road ahead, Steve planned his wedding to Kayla.
Days before the nuptials, Kayla regained her hearing, but her speech
still hadn't returned. Kayla had hoped that she would get it back in
order to be able to speak her vows rather than sign them. On July 25,
1988, Steve and Kayla's wedding took place atop a yacht on Salem
harbor. While signing her wedding vows with Kimberly as her
interpreter, Kayla suddenly stopped. To everyone's amazement and joy,
her speech miraculously returned and she was able to spoke her vows
to Steve. After a reception on the yacht, Steve and Kayla took off
for a honeymoon in Asia.
While
honeymooning in Bangkok, Steve and Kayla ran across a peculiar little
boy near their hotel who seemed to be lost. Luckily, Kayla was able
to speak to him via sign language. His name was Benjy, and his mother
had disappeared while visiting a pagoda. Not wanting to leave the boy
behind, Steve and Kayla brought him back to their hotel. After the
American embassy failed to locate the mother, Steve and Kayla brought
him back to Salem. Soon, they were contacted by a woman named Ellen
Hawk, Benjy's mother. Ellen confessed to Kayla and Steve that she
needed to hide Benjy from his evil and powerful father. Convinced
that Benjy should be with his mother, Kayla and Steve said good-bye
to him. However, Ellen never returned to pick up Benjy. That night,
Steve found her dead on the pier. Someone had clearly murdered Ellen
in order to get to Benjy. While Roman investigated Ellen's murder and
its connection to a similar murder days before, Kayla told Benjy
about his mother's death and promised to let him stay with her and
Steve. Furthermore, she wanted to begin adoption proceedings! Though
Steve was just as fond of Benjy as Kayla, he wasn't sure about
wanting to begin a family. Kayla realized that she was getting too
carried away and decided to take it slower. Meanwhile, Kayla was
attacked and Benjy nearly kidnapped. Deciding that the only way out
of the mystery was to discover the identity of Benjy's father, Kayla,
Steve, and Benjy returned to Bangkok to investigate. However, all
they found was more danger, more attempted kidnappings and even an
exploding farmhouse. When it got to be too much, they returned to
Salem. But the trip had not been a complete waste -- they had found a
photo of Benjy with his father. The man's face was cut off, but he
had one distinctive feature: a silver ring. Benjy didn't know his
father's name so there was no apparent way to track the man down.
Once arrived in Salem, government officials began pressuring for the
return of Benjy. Refusing to turn the boy in, Kayla and Steve sent
Benjy to hide out in a mountain cabin with his teacher, Peggy.
Unfortunately, Steve was arrested for refusing to cooperate with the
authorities. Meanwhile, Roman got a glimpse of the photograph of
Benjy and his father. As it turned out, the ring that the man was
wearing was identical to one that Roman had taken from a man who had
been murdered in the same way as Ellen. It somehow tied into his
past. Roman was desperate to interrogate Benjy but Kayla flatly
refused.
Aside from this entire mess, Kayla was forced into another one while working at the Emergency Center one night. Some men, among them Emilio Ramirez, came in with a gunshot victim and threatened her at gunpoint to save him. Kayla was livid when she saw that her patient was none other than Harper Deveraux, who had escaped from prison. Kayla reluctantly saved the madman's life, but then the men that were with Harper forced her to come with them because she knew too much. In the end, Kayla was saved when the police caught up with Harper and his goons. After this, Steve was released from jail for his part in helping the police catch Harper.
Once
reunited, Steve and Kayla focused their efforts into finding Benjy's
father. However, the danger continued to escalate. On Halloween,
Carrie, Roman's daughter, was kidnapped from Shane and Kimberly
Donovan's housewarming party. A note for Roman was left saying, "Your
child for mine." Roman pleaded with Kayla to let him hand over Benjy
to his father but she refused. This decision angered most of the
Brady family, but Steve and Kayla loved Benjy too much to sacrifice
him, even for Carrie. Meanwhile, Benjy's father continued to torment
the Johnsons, going so far as to kidnap both Kayla and Benjy; they
were rescued by Roman and Orion, a man from Roman's past who was
Ellen's father, was kidnapped instead. Later, Benjy was kidnapped
again along with Steve. While Benjy escaped and found his way back to
Kayla, Steve was almost killed in a trap set by the man working for
Benjy's father. Once out, Steve told Kayla that he believed
everything happenning to them was about more than just returning
Benjy -- Benjy's father seemed to have something against the Bradys.
Soon after this, Benjy was kidnapped again, and this time, Drew,
Shane's twin brother, seemed to be involved. Kayla and Steve believed
that Shane knew something about what was going on and finally got him
to tell them that Benjy's father was in the Bahamas. Armed with this
information, Kayla and Steve flew to the Caribbean to get Benjy back.
Benjy's father lived on a private island which Steve and Kayla snuck
onto. But as they were walking along the forest, they noticed cameras
and alarm systems. While Steve returned to the main island to get
help from Shane, Kayla was caught by a guard and taken inside a
compound. A few hours after being imprisoned, she was joined by
Kimberly, who had also been lured to the island. Once together, they
were joined by Benjy's father: Stefano DiMera.
In
addition to Kim and Kayla, Stefano managed to lure Roman, Diana,
Steve, and Shane to the island and capture them. Once they were all
together, Stefano joined them with his assistant. Though he called
him Iago, everyone was shocked to see it was Drew! Benjy, Carrie, and
Orion were also being kept in Stefano's compound. Before Kayla and
company could figure out how to rescue them, Stefano invited his
guests to a formal dinner. At the dinner, Stefano caused the Bradys
to turn against each other by revealing a secret that Shane had kept
for four years. In 1984, while everyone believed that Roman had died,
Shane and the ISA had known otherwise. In fact, they had the chance
to rescue him from Stefano. The Bradys felt betrayed by Shane, but
managed to overcome their differences in order to escape from the
compound. Steve and Kayla successfully reached Benjy's room and
convinced him that his father was not a very good man. After rescuing
Benjy, Kayla and Steve also found Carrie and proceeded to escape from
the island. Once safely back in Salem, Steve and Kayla mutually
decided to begin the process to adopt Benjy after the boy finally
rejected Stefano. Since Stefano disappeared, and Orion was presumed
dead in an explosion, Kayla believed that there would be no problem
in adopting Benjy. But shortly after Christmas, Orion, who had merely
been hiding from Stefano, returned to Salem. He wanted to raise
Benjy. Since he was Benjy's grandfather and only relative, he had all
rights to him. Kayla and Steve were heartbroken to lose Benjy, but
they sought comfort in knowing that he would be loved. In early
January 1989, they said good-bye to their boy as Benjy and Orion left
for Europe.
