August 12-16, 1996 Updates

Carrie & Austin arrive in Paris for the beginning of their honeymoon. They debate whether to visit all the tourist spots or to stay in their hotel room. They decide to do some sight seeing & are completely oblivious that so many of their friends are below them in the underground.
Kristen wakes up after the cave-in in the tunnel & tries to wake her mother. Rachel's leg is trapped & Kristen is unable to free it. She realises she will have to go for help but discovers there is no way out. She tells her mother she is sorry for all her evil activities & would tell John everything if they get out. Rachel smells gas & they fear that there may be an explosion. Kristen starts screaming for help.
Abe & Lexie begin to serach the tunnels. They follow a tunnel not marked on their map but come to a dead end. They are about to leave when Lexie hears a call for help (Kristen).
Vivian & Ivan continue to search for the entrance to the underground. Vivian stumbles upon a trapdoor in the ground & Ivan accidentally activates the door causing Vivian to fall. Ivan jumps in after her.
Marlena tearfully watches as John is about to be beheaded. She manages to get away from the guards. She races to the guillotine & places her own head above John's. Stefano then stops the guillotine & orders the guards to take her away. John agrees that she should not witness this & tells her to go.
Marlena is taken to a cage where she says a prayer for John. As John is placed back in the guillotine, Vivian & Ivan enter. Vivian insists that Stefano sign her affadavit but he tells her to leave. While this is happening John manages to get out of the guillotine. He successfully fights off the guards but then Stefano begins to strangle him. Vivian knocks Stefano over the head. John thanks her for saving his life & she says she couldn't stand back & watch him die. John races out after Marlena. He frees her from the cage & they flee into the tunnels. Vivian & Ivan are about to leave but Stefano, who has recovered, stops them.

Jack & Sharon are having dinner at the Salem Club but Sharon realises Jack's heart is not in it. She tells him she knows he is still in love with Jen. They decide not to continue seeing each other. Peter & Jen also go to the Salem Club & see Jack & Sharon. Sharon tells Jen that they are no longer dating & that Jack still loves her. Peter is worried about Jack & cannot wait for the new house to be built. Maggie & Laura discuss Jack's feelings. Laura sees Jack after his date & hears that he has broken up with Sharon. She says she knows something that will get his mind off things.
Abe & Lexie rescue Kristen & Rachel from the cave-in. They continue searching the tunnels. They find the guillotine room where Stefano has locked Vivian & Ivan. Abe accuses Vivian of helping Stefano again. Despite Vivian's pleas of innocence, Abe has Rene arrest her & Ivan. Abe & the others find the room with the cage. While Abe & Rene look at the maps, Kristen explores the cage & finds Marlena's diary where she has written all of Kristen's exploits. Kristen feels remorse for all her evil deeds & realises all of this is her fault. Rachel slips away unnoticed.
John & Marlena hide in the tunnels while Stefano & his guards search for them. Marlena tries to tell John about Kristen but he says they need to get out of the tunnels first. As Marlena tries again, there is another cave-in & Marlena is hit by fallen walls. John carries her out of the tunnel & meets Stefano. Stefano pulls a gun & says he will kill John. Rachel appears & says she will not let Stefano destroy Marlena as he did her. She removes the veil & shows Stefano her scars. Stefano is horrified & John takes the opportunity to grab the gun. Stefano & John struggle & a shot is fired.

Peter wonders if Jennifer is upset by Jack dating. Jen insists that she is pleased he is moving on with his life - she just didn't think Sharon was the right woman for him. Peter suggests that they finally go on their honeymoon & Jen gladly accepts this idea.
Laura takes Jack back to her office to try & help him get over his feelings toward Jen. They talk about the Meadows. This reminds Jack of Daniel Scott & how Jack had tried to proove that their was a link between Peter & Daniel. Laura tells Jack that he was unsuccessful before & not to try again. Daniel gambles away a large sum of money at a casino & the casino boss warns Daniel that he has huge debts & needs to pay them right awy. Daniel realises he must return to Salem & see Peter.
Stefano is shot in the arm & John gives Rachel the gun to keep Stefano from running. John carries Marlena (who is still unconscious) as they try to find the exit to the tunnels. While John rests for a moment, Stefano slips away & Rachel follows. Abe, Lexie & Kristen find John & Marlena. Rene takes Marlena above ground while the others go after Rachel & Stefano. Kristen remembers her vow to make amends for her evil deeds & Lexie continues to worry that Stefano may take his anger out on Abe.
In Salem Celeste is plagues with a sense of danger. She reads her tarot cards & sees the death card. Rachel catches up to Stefano & points the gun at him. She blames Stefano for all the suffering she has gone through & for killing her husband. Stefano explains that his death was an accident & that he took her to Maison Blanche to help her recover form her depression. Rachel does not believe this & wants to make Stefano accountable for his past sins. Stefano warns Rachel that they are near a gas deposit & firing the gun may cause an explosion that will kill them both. He tells her he is making his escape & starts to move toward a tunnel. Rachel sees Kristen & the others approaching in the distance, asks forgiveness & fires the gun.

Hope feels guilty about not continuing the Titan contract & causing Franco to leave town but she agrees to abide by her decision to wait until Bo has proof of Franco's guilt. When Bo gets called to the station, Hope goes for a walk & meets Franco. They run into a cop who tells Hope that another woman was attacked. She & Franco go to the police station. Bo questions the woman, Karen, who says that her attacker was a good looking man who could be a model. The police bring in another man & Karen identifies the other man as her attacker. A search of his apartment yields a torn blue shirt (that Jill said she tore when she was attacked). Hope is thrilled that Franco is now cleared & Bo agrees that he is no longer a suspect. She tells Franco that she is telling Keith she will do the assignment & that he can stay in town.
After Rachel fires the gun, there is an explosion. John, Abe, Lexie & Kristen are not hurt but there is no sign of Stefano or Rachel. When Kristen starts experiencing cramps, they all go the hospital. Abe & Rene search the ruins while John anxiously waits for news on Kristen & the baby and Marlena. When Abe reports that is unlikely Rachel will be found alive, Kristen doesn't feel strong enough to tell John the truth. She throws Marlena's diary (thats he took from the cage) in a hospital bin. An orderly finds it & hands it to a nun who promises to try to find its owner. When Kristen learns that Rachel was trying to save Marlena when she pursued Stefano, she blames Marlena for her Mother's death. She also overhears John tell Abe that Marlena wanted to say something about Kristen.
Lexie feels conflicting emotions when she learns that Stefano presumably died in the explosion. In Salem, Celeste is plagued with a feeling of danger. She begs Caroline to tell her where Abe & Lexie are but Caroline will not divulge the information. Celeste then has a premonition that they are in Paris, searching for Stefano & resolves to go to her daughter. Before she leaves she has a sense of danger surrounding someone Caroline loves. Caroline dismisses this.

John waits for Marlena to regain consciousness. He tells Kristen that Marlena had wanted to tell him something about her (Kristen) but Kristen says she has no idea what that could be. She urges John to call the family to let them know Marlena is safe. While he is gone, Kristen gives Marlena a large dose of painkiller hoping it will make her sleep longer & delay John learning the truth. Just as John & Kristen are about to leave Marlena's room, Marlena wakes up. She tells John there is something he has to know. The nun with Marlena's journal is about to ask John if he knows who owns the journal when they are interrupted by another nun.
Carrie & Austin spend a romantic morning together. They get a call from John (who learnt that they were in Paris from Caroline who learnt from Kate) to tell them that Marlena is safe. They visit her at the hospital & are excited as they can now set a wedding date.
Sami tells Jamie that she is not giving up trying to break up Austin & Carrie. Kate overhears this & tells Sami that she will not let her break them up. Mary overhears this. Later she visits Sami & steals a photo of Will. Kate tells Shawn & Caroline of Sami's intentions. They visit Sami & tell her that Marlena had been kidnapped but is now safe. Sami is angry that she was not told earlier & she is even more furious when she learns that Carrie knew but she didn't.
Hope & Franco prepare for a trip to the Carribbean for the next photo shoot. Once on the plane, they learn they will be going to Santa Rosa. Hope tells Franco that the island holds special memories for her & Bo & she wishes Bo could have come. Kate & Bo discuss Hope's contract with Titan. Kate mentions that Billie will be coming to Salem for a Countess Wilhemina meeting. Bo says he is looking forward to seeing her again.
