June 17-21, 1996 Updates

Monday 17June96

On Monday, John is obsessed with finding Marlena, even after he is told that her plane wreckage has been found [Stefano's doing, of course.] When Abe tries to get John to accept that Marlena is gone, John turns to his friend and cries "Knowing evil Stefano the way I do, how could you even suggest such a thing?" [I have to agree with John here. Stefano has done this too many times to too many people to trust that things are what they seem.] Meanwhile, Kristen, who has become more devious than ever, is feeling pretty confident that she has finally gotten exactly what she wanted [and according to her doctor, her baby is doing well too.] But after a visit with Belle [where she learned that Belle had been asking about her Mom constantly], Kristen is left to wonder if she should have been more careful about what she wished for. [She goes to the chapel and asks forgiveness for any harm that came to Marlena because of her thoughts. She never meant to hurt her. Yeah, right.] Carrie and Austin bask in the joy of being together again as they share a day of romance and love. [Carrie is reluctant to get up and go to work, so Austin convinces her to stay in bed. He's sure Kate won't mind.] But in a moment alone, Austin becomes wistful about no longer being able to share a home with his son. [Carrie sees that Austin is sad and urges him to open up, since they vowed not to hide anything from each other anymore. She is understanding when he says that he misses Will being around.] Jamie tries to make amends with Sami [she says she doesn't blame Jamie for the truth coming out, since she knew it was over once Kate learned about her drugging Austin; but she's not ready to forgive and forget either], and it becomes obvious that Sami has no intention of staying down for long. [Sami tries to come up with a plan to get Austin back. She is certain they could make a happy family. Jamie smartly refuses to get involved. Caroline overhears and lectures Sami about not realizing that what she did was wrong. Sami refuses to take it and points the finger back at Caroline and Marlena for hurting the ones they love to get what they wanted (i.e. Caroline having an affair with Victor and producing Bo, and Marlena having an affair with John and producing Belle). Caroline can't deny her mistakes, but it doesn't justify what Sami did. Sami doesn't listen, and later when Will says "Da-Da", she realizes what she can do to get Austin back. Somewhere hidden, Stefano has Marlena (still drugged). She dreams of John rescuing her and they admit their love. Stefano is sure that no one will look for her, since he made it look like they are both dead. He scowls as he listens to her moan in her sleep about how much she loves John. He will make Marlena his.]

Tuesday 18June96

On Tuesday, Marlena is not dead but is being held captive by Stefano. Where she is and what Stefano plans to do with her is still unknown. [She continues to dream of John, but it is actually Stefano who is near her. When she realizes this, she wakes with a start and pulls away, repulsed. Despite Marlena's claim that she would rather die than be with him, Stefano is sure she will relent eventually. No one will look for her, since now the plane "wreckage" has been found. He offers her a drink, and she realizes too late that it is drugged. She comes to in a strange jail cell (well furnished, but locked). Stefano comes to visit but she is not receptive, so he locks her up and leaves her in the dark.] In Salem, John continues to hold out hope that Marlena is alive. Kristen is upset over Marlena's apparent passing [yeah, right], but forces herself to look to the future for her unborn baby's sake. [Rachel knows that Kristen is only concerned about having John to herself. As soon as Kristen heard about Marlena's "death", she put her engagement ring back on.] Still determined to find Stefano, John begins searching for the man's hideout. He starts by going to Stefano's only friend, Celeste. [She honestly has no idea where Stefano is (and, like John, does not believe that he is dead), but she makes up a list of all the places Stefano might be. Laura stops by to see Rachel, and Kristen wants her assurance that she won't spill any of her secrets. Rachel warns Kristen that secrets have a way of coming out. They just might -- Rachel can't remember the details of any of Stefano's old hideouts, but if given the psychotropic drug, she may be able to. Laura leaves to get the drug, though she believes only by a miracle would Marlena be alive.] Bo and Hope try to put the news about Marlena aside [not everyone knows yet] so they can plan their honeymoon with Shawn-Douglas. [He is thrilled to hear that he is going with them. He works with Grandpa Shawn to throw an engagement party for his parents.] They decide to work out the details at the Brady Pub [Hope and Bo are working with Abe and John regarding Marlena and Stefano's disappearance. Everyone tries to convince John that she's gone, and he tells Bo that he of all people should understand what he's going through. He "knows" that Marlena is out there somewhere. Abe receives a phone call from Shawn telling him about the surprise party for Bo and Hope, and they work together to get them to the Pub.] Sami refuses to go down without a fight, and finds the perfect bait to reel Austin back into her life - their son Will. [While Carrie is out, Sami stops by to see Austin with Will. She's excited because Will said his first word. Of course he says it on cue for Austin, who also gets excited and gets out the video camera. When Carrie returns and sees the scene, she asks Austin to leave so she can speak with Sami, whereupon she rails into her for trying to manipulate them again. She won't fall for it.] While Sami is working on that idea, Carrie and Austin make an important decision. [Carrie makes Austin realize that despite the fact that Sami loves Will, the best thing for him is for Austin to have sole custody.]

Wednesday 19June96

On Wednesday, Austin and Carrie are trying to decide whether or not they should sue Sami for custody of little Will. [Though Austin thinks Sami loves Will and is a good mother, he agrees with Carrie that it would be best if Sami had no influence on him. Austin calls Mickey to initiate the process. Carrie tells Austin that she is going to visit Lucas to see how he's doing. She feels bad for him, because he cared for her and was so good to her. She has no idea that he was involved in Sami's schemes, until she overhears him talking with Sami. Sami is trying to convince Lucas to team up with her again so they can get Austin and Carrie back. He wants nothing to do with her, but Carrie has already heard enough to incriminate him. When confronted, Lucas admits that he knew about Sami's plans. Carrie is hurt, even though Lucas swears that he truly cares about her. Austin comes along and gets in a fight with Lucas, who is so distraught over losing Carrie that he doesn't care what Austin does to him (it was interrupted by a special news report, so I don't know exactly what happened.) Sami innocently asks Austin when he would like to visit with Will, and he informs her that he has started proceedings to gain custody of Will.] When Sami learns that she may lose Will, she decides to take drastic measures to make sure that will never happen [sounds like she plans to run away with him]. Peter, Jennifer, and Abby spend a special day bonding together as a family. But as Jennifer and Peter begin to make plans for their future [Peter wants to start a family with Jennifer, and she is agreeable], Rachel undergoes another therapy session with Laura. If this one turns out like the last one, it won't be long before Peter and Jennifer's plans fall apart. Jack hears about the upcoming session, and begs Laura to get the truth about Peter out of the soon-to-be-drugged Rachel. Laura knows that's unethical, but she's torn between her fears for her daughter and her career ethics. [Jack plays on her mothering instinct, saying that she must protect her daughter and granddaughter from Peter. When Jack sneaks in to the DiMera mansion to question Rachel, Laura finds him and tosses him out. She refuses to question Rachel about Peter, but it turns out she doesn't have to. Rachel becomes agitated on the drug and starts talking about her children and Stefano's influence on them. She reveals that Peter has done very bad things, and is afraid Jennifer would leave him if she found out. He's trying to change, but everything Jack said about him was true. Laura is dumbfounded to learn that Jack was right all along. Will she tell him what Rachel said?]

Thursday 20June96

On Thursday, in spite of the evidence, John believes Marlena is alive. He comes up with a plan to conduct raids on Stefano's former hideouts. [These hideouts are all over the globe, but money is no object as John coordinates a plan to raid them all at the same time so Stefano can't get away.] Meanwhile, Stefano continues to hold Marlena captive in a new secret location. [When Marlena bemoans the thought of being separated from her family and loved ones, Stefano gets the inspiration to have a child with Marlena - a son (of course). That will bond them together. She is repulsed.] Filled with outrage and despair, Marlena decides that the only way to escape Stefano is to kill him. [She keeps the knife from her dinner and pretends to stab herself. Stefano rushes in to her cell and she attacks him. He doesn't believe she can kill him, and before she has a chance, his henchmen arrive and pull her off of him.] When Hope shows up unexpectedly at the station wanting to help search for Marlena, Abe objects to allowing a suspended officer to help with anything. [Actually he didn't object to her being there until she started offering suggestions on how to find Marlena. He then reminded her that she can't work on the case.] Hope and Abe both look to Bo wondering if he will side with the force or with Hope. [Bo wants to ignore the rules. John wants Hope to help since she was kidnapped by Stefano herself and might be able to 'get inside his head'. Abe agrees to allow Hope to work with John as a consultant. Celeste stops by with info on the location of another of Stefano's hideouts. It's nearby, and John intends to storm this one himself. Abe and Bo plan to accompany him, but when Hope insists on going, Abe stops her. It's not allowed. Frustrated, Hope stomps off. Later Abe receives special permission to let Hope work with them. Law enforcement officials all over the world invade Stefano's hideouts, but no one finds him, including John. Stefano receives word of what John has done, and Marlena is hopeful. He reminds her, however, that John did not find her, and he never will. John is depressed, but not about to give up. While he and Abe and Bo and Hope are thinking about their next step, Celeste comes up with another place to search.] Laura is stunned to hear the truth about Peter from a drugged Rachel. Now she must decide whether or not she should keep the doctor-patient confidentiality or tell Jennifer the truth about Peter. In the meantime, Peter visits Rachel. As they chat, Peter worries that Rachel may have let the truth slip about him. [She admits that she was drugged so she could try to remember where Stefano might have taken Marlena, but it's possible that she said something about Peter. Peter now knows why Laura was distracted and cold toward him earlier.] He rushes home to find Laura and Jennifer together. [Laura is disturbed to learn that she and Peter are planning to have a baby. Just by the look on Laura's face, Peter knows that Rachel told his secrets to Laura.]

Friday 21 June 1996

On Friday, the raids of Stefano's hideouts prove futile. Celeste tells John and the others about a storage facility where Stefano kept some private things. [Celeste never noticed anything of value, but perhaps something might give them a clue as to his whereabouts.] They head over there, but find no sign of Stefano or Marlena. The police commissioner tells Abe that since they have a plane wreckage, Marlena must be dead; and therefore the commissioner is closing the case. [Though Abe and Bo and Hope tell John they will continue to help him, he refuses, knowing it could jeopardize their careers.] John is not about to give up on Marlena, and returns to the warehouse to have another look around. Inside, John finds a strange device that may lead him to find Marlena. [Marlena rests in her "cage" despairingly. She has visions of John, who encourages her to find strength in their love and hold on. It's hard to do when Stefano wants to have a child with her. Disgusted by his advances, she looks around her cell for a way to wash herself. She finds a shower and disrobes. When Stefano sees this, he enters and approaches her. At this point, John picks up the "strange device" (a pair of funky shades) and puts them on. He sees a vision of Stefano going after Marlena. John reaches out to her but can't touch her. It's virtual reality.] Peter and Kristen both fear that their mother may have said something about them to Laura while under the influence of those drugs. [Peter admits to Kristen that Laura has been distant from him, but he hopes it's not because of anything Rachel said. Peter knows Jack can't wait to get incriminating information on him.] Meanwhile, Laura counsels a young woman at the Horton Center who has AIDS. Jennifer, Alice, and Jack are touched by the woman's story of courage. [Token speech about AIDS by Laura. Dana, the young woman, sees Jennifer and Abby and then Jack, and comments on what a loving family they are. Jennifer doesn't correct her, and listens as Dana reminds them of how precious life is.]
