April 29-May 3, 1996 Updates

Monday 29April96

On Monday, Jennifer, Peter, and Jack are horrified to see the woman in white jump into the river in an attempted suicide. Peter realizes that if she dies, so does the threat to his happiness with Jennifer. Jack knows his dream of proving Peter's guilt ends if the lady succeeds in killing herself, so he jumps in to save her. [The woman is found, but they can't find a pulse. Despite the woman's wishes that no one see her face, Jack has no choice but to remove her veil to give her CPR. All are shocked at the sight.] Sami wakes to a bright new morning, pleased that the horror of yesterday's inquisition is behind her. [She has a nightmare that Austin and Carrie reunited and kicked her out of Austin's apartment, but in reality Austin treats her wonderfully, and says he will do so from now on. He hands her his credit card and tells her to go shopping for herself. Jamie shows up, and he encourages the two girls to shop together. They run into Lucas, who is miserable because Carrie just told him she didn't think she should see him anymore because she still has feelings for Austin. But after talking with Sami, it appears to Lucas that Austin has moved on. Maybe he hasn't lost Carrie after all.] But Kate wasn't fooled by Sami's performance, and is now busy looking for another way to prove Sami was behind Carrie and Austin's breakup. It looks as if Kate may get all the answers she needs when she spots Jamie. Now if only Kate can convince Jamie to tell her the truth. [After returning home, Sami is invited out to dinner by Austin. She is thrilled that he is asking her out. Jonah questions Austin's actions, but Austin says it's not so crazy for him to pursue a relationship with Sami given the situation.] Kristen tries to trick John into giving her back the letter [he took it from her when she claimed it was in regards to Tony's business dealings], but John teases that it must be from a secret boyfriend of Kristen's. Laughing, John takes the letter, ready to read it. [Kristen is in a panic about what she'll say to John, until he looks at her, confused. These papers are drawings of Brady's. How did she get them? She's relieved, but then realizes that she must get to Marlena before she reads John's letter. Too late. Marlena tear- fully goes through John's letter to her, overjoyed at his words of love. Then she wonders if he's really in love with Kristen, whether he still means the words he wrote, and recalls his a conversation when John was talking about his feelings, but Marlena made it clear (per Kristen's instructions) that she has moved on with her life. Did she push him away? It made him think she didn't love him, but she does. Was he trying to tell her that he loved her? She rushes downstairs to talk with John. Seeing him, she hesitates, but then pushes on because she can't go on not knowing. Letter in hand, she tells John they have to talk, and it's important.]

  Tuesday 30April96

On Tuesday, Carrie is beginning to think that she might have a chance to get back with Austin, but just as she finds the courage to speak of her secret feelings [yeah, secret to nobody but Austin], Sami saunters over. Carrie doesn't know it, but Sami is about to drop a bombshell of her own that will have Carrie wondering if she will ever get back with Austin. [Carrie tells Austin she is glad to see him, because she wanted to talk with him. He says the same thing, and admits that he has done a lot of thinking since last night when Kate confronted Sami. He tells a shocked and heartbroken Carrie that he's going to stick by Sami and try to build a relationship with her. They're already friends, so it's not unthinkable. That's what happened between her and Lucas, right? Austin doesn't know that Carrie told Lucas she didn't want to see him anymore. Lucas waits in the sidelines, knowing that if Sami succeeds in getting Ausing, Carrie will be his. Meanwhile, Kate stops Jamie at the mall. She wants to talk about Sami; after all, she is the mother of her grandchild. Jamie is evasive, and then Kate plays on her guilt. If Sami played a part in keeping Austin and Carrie apart, they have a right to know. Two people who love each other should be together. Unable to reveal the secrets of her best friend, Jamie runs off. Kate realizes she was right about Sami.] Jack pulls the woman from the river, and he, Jennifer, and Peter rush her to the hospital. While waiting for the lady to come to, Jack paces, asking "Who is this woman, and why did she jump into the river tonight?" [He of course blames Peter, who of course denies it, and Jennifer of course supports Peter and not Jack. Mike examines the woman's facial scars, noting that she must have been in excruciating pain, both physically and mentally.] The letter that Kristen thought was John's wasn't, which means John's letter professing his love for Marlena is missing. Kristen must find the letter before Marlena does, but Kristen doesn't know that someone else has already found it. [That would be Marlena. She approaches John alone and brings up the subject of their relationship, then and now. John doesn't quite grasp her meaning and why she is bringing this up now. They are interrupted by a phone call about the woman in white, and John, Marlena, and Kristen head to the hospital. Based on how Marlena and John are acting, Kristen assumes that Marlena did not find the letter and talk to John about it. While they are at the hospital, Kristen returns home to scour the house for it. The maid says she empties Marlena's trash quite often, and whatever Kristen is looking for was probably incinerated. Kristen is relieved. She doesn't know that Marlena has John's letter in her pocket. Jack tries to get John to help him investigate the identity of the woman in white, since it could benefit both of them. John is hesitant to help Jack discredit Peter. Hope complains to Bo about being stuck in traffic school giving safety lectures. He snickers, saying he's not in charge of her assigments. When a weird guy with a tape recorder comes in and won't deal with Bo, Hope asks to take over. Bo gladly lets her. Hope begins to regret it when the whacko starts talking about receiving messages from aliens (he intercepts cell phone conversations), but then in his garbled recordings she hears the name "Stefano", and is determined to become involved with the case.]

Wednesday 1May96

On Wednesday, Marlena is about to tell John that she read the letter and now knows that he loves her, when the phone rings. It's the hospital, and they need her to tend to the injured woman in white [this actually happened yesterday]. After doing so, Marlena returns to John, determined to talk to him. [The seriousness in Marlena's voice and her discomfort with what she's trying to say intrigues John. He tells her to just say it. She reaches for his letter, ready to show him that she knows how he feels.] She's interrupted again, this time by Kristen, who has an announcement of her own - an annoucement that will change their lives forever. [Marlena tells her that she and John are having an important conversation, but Kristen insists that her news can't wait. Ecstatic, she tells John that she's pregnant.] At the hospital, the woman is still unconscious. Although Marlena can't get through to the woman, she can tell that something is causing her great agitation, even as she sleeps. [Stefano's shadowman disguises himself as a doctor and enters the woman's room. Stefano must know if she is who he thinks she is. The man plays a tape for her and sets up a video camera to capture her response. The music is the same tune that brought back memories for John. According to Stefano's flashbacks of the woman, she moved her hands to the music, as if she were playing the piano. Stefano is relieved to see that this woman had no reaction to the tune. But later, the woman begins moving her hands.] Bo continues to work on the Stefano case, this time with the FBI. Hope wants to be part of the action, but it's no go. Frustrated, Hope decides the only way to be assigned to the case is to track down something so crucial to the investigation that there's no way they could continue without her. [She does so by meeting with the tape recorder guy again. He was able to clear up his recordings so the voices are more clear. The conversation definitely has something to do with Stefano. The guy says one of the calls was local, but the other may have been out of state, or even in another country. Hope urges him to try to trace the numbers. He says he'll need special equipment, and Hope tells him she will figure out a way to get what he needs. John agrees to help Jack look into the woman in white's past. Jack approaches Hope, but since he has no solid evidence to go on and she's busy with another case, she can't help him. Peter is disturbed by his experiences with the woman, and can't understand why she lied for him. Jennifer sees Peter's anguish, and he admits that the mystery surrounding the woman is really getting to him for some reason. She assures him that she has no doubts that he wasn't involved with Jude St. Clair. Jack is determined to prove otherwise.]

Thursday 2May96

On Thursday, Kristen announces that she is pregnant with John's child, which certainly knocks the wind out of Marlena's sails. Marlena watches as John and Kristen embrace, trying to fight back the tears. Turning away, Marlena pockets John's letter professing his undying love for her, and leaves. [She goes to her office, where Laura finds her and notices that she is upset. Marlena shows her John's letter, and then tells her that Kristen is pregnant - and this changes everything. Laura disagrees. If John does love Marlena, Kristen will be hurt regardless. It's best that she find out now, so Marlena should talk to John. She agrees to think about it. She fantasizes that John walks in and sees her with his letter, and admits his love for her. But what about Kristen? He says he'll be there for her and the baby, but it's Marlena he loves. Then John *really* walks in, and Marlena tries once again to continue their conversation. She's just about to show John the letter when Kristen bursts in. She called Shawn and Caroline about her pregnancy and they want to talk to John. Alone with Marlena, Kristen gushes about being pregnant and feeling ecstatic, and she claims that she helped her and John get back together. Kristen embraces Marlena, who is very uncomfortable and upset. John returns and invites them to a celebration at the Brady Pub. Marlena begs off, saying she has work to do; maybe she'll stop by later. John apologizes for the interruption to their conversation again, and asks her what it was she wanted to talk about. Marlena says it can wait, but John says he wants to know *now* (with Kristen in the room?)] Meanwhile, Kate is still determined to prove that Sami and Vivian schemed to break up Carrie and Austin. She believes Jamie knows something, and hopes to get the girl to talk. During this time, a very upset Jamie calls Lucas. She tells him that she isn't sure how much longer she can stay quiet about what Sami and Lucas have done. When Lucas asks "Why not?" Jamie cries "The pressure is getting to me!" Lucas doesn't like the sound of this, but what can he do to keep Jamie quiet? [Though she promises to keep Lucas' name out of it, he's sure Sami will reveal his involvement. He asks Jamie to keep quiet, and he'll talk with his mother about leaving her alone. This backfires, however. When Kate hears how upset she made Jamie, she's certain that it's because she's hiding Sami's secrets. Sami and Austin continue their 'date'. They leave the club and go to the park, where a very depressed Carrie spots them. Sami lays it on thick, saying she never got to go out on dates in high school, and no one ever made her feel special. She is thrilled when Austin lightly kisses her. After they leave, Carrie cries about how she'll always love Austin. Suddenly, he's there behind her, saying he heard her (probably a fantasy). Jamie stops by to see Sami and confesses that she can't keep silent anymore. Sami doesn't want to hear this, because she's sure Austin is beginning to fall for her. Meanwhile, Vivian is up to her own schemes. She hires a lawyer and holds a press conference at which she announces that she is suing for custody of baby Philip. Victor is furious.]

Friday 3May96

On Friday, Marlena feels she has a right to be happy, so she's going to come clean about the letter, and if it hurts Kristen, that's just too bad. [She asks Kristen to leave so she can speak with John privately.] Just then, Dr. Bader arrives with the news that Kristen's pregnancy is going to be tricky, and that she must be careful not to get upset by anything. Marlena realizes that she must keep quiet because she doesn't want to be responsible for a miscarriage. [She instead announces to John and Kristen that she is moving back to her apartment. When Laura stops by and sees John and Kristen in Marlena's office, Kristen gleefully says that they're having a baby. Clearly Marlena did not speak with John about her feelings.] Laura warns Marlena that this is not wise, but Marlena is adamant. [She even insists on going to the party Shawn and Caroline are throwing for John and Kristen. When Marlena comments that Kristen is the innocent party in all this, Laura reminds her not to forget about her own feelings. At the party, Abe is less than joyful about the news of Kristen's pregnancy. He asks John if this is what he wants. What about Marlena? John says he knows Marlena loves him -- as a friend. Kristen pours salt in the wounds when she asks Marlena to be their baby's godmother. She can't refuse. Marlena leaves the pub and tearfully looks at John's letter again. Laura follows and takes the letter from her, saying she is going to show it to John and inform him that Marlena has seen it.] Jamie tells Sami that she can't handle the guilt of carrying Sami's secrets anymore. Sami warns Jamie to keep her mouth shut. [Sami implies that Jamie wants Carrie and Austin back together so she can have Lucas, and then says if she squeals, she'll tell Lucas that she broke them up on purpose so she could have him. Jamie is hurt that her 'friend' Sami would do this to her.] They are arguing when Carrie enters [her seeing Austin in the park was just a fantasy by the way]. Sami freezes, not knowing how much Carrie heard. [Jamie runs from the place crying, bumping into Austin on the way out. Sami insists that she and Jamie just had a stupid argument; they'll work it out. Later, Kate runs into Jamie nin the park and reassures her that it's OK for her to tell the truth about Sami - she'll protect her if Sami is threatening her. Will Jamie talk?] Victor confronts Vivian about her intention to file for custody of Philip. When Vivian just shrugs, Victor snarls "I'll do anything to win this battle." Vivian agrees to give up Philip if Victor will go away with her. Victor is appalled. [Vivian is certain that he can love her again if they spend some time together. Victor tells her that she's more demented than he thought. He becomes extremely agitated and collapses onto the floor.]
