Ê On Monday, John's trial begins. [Kristen brings John a change of clothes, and his 'lucky tie'.] Before taking her seat, Kristen turns to Peter and whispers, "Remember, you're not supposed to put me on the stand." Peter reassures Kristen, while secretly plotting to do whatever he must to convict John. [All are shocked when Peter makes his opening statement and says he is going for the death penalty.] Mike is the first to take the stand. Peter tries to make him state from a medical standpoint that John is guilty, but Mike won't. [As a character witness, Mike says that he would trust John with his life.] Laura takes the stand next. When she echoes what Mike said, John is feeling pretty darn optimistic. Then Abe takes the stand, and Peter forces him to give testimony against John. [Abe must say that there was gun- powder on the doorknob, and gunpowder residue was found on John's hand. The gun that fired the bullet that killed Tony belongs to John.] At last they break for lunch. [Abe tells John he's sorry, but John knows he had to tell the truth.] Jennifer knows Peter is just doing his job, but it hurts her to see John being ripped apart. Jack shows Laura the matchbook Jennifer found on the floor in Jude's hideout. [She looks at the numbers written on it and thinks one of them looks like an international phone number.] He calls the number and discovers it's a bank, but it's closed until tomorrow. [Bo has a nightmare about when Hope 'died' over the vat of acid. Upon waking, he searches for Hope. She promises him she would never willingly leave him like that again. Frustrated and impatient, Hope calls Alice. Reassured, she goes skiing.] Bo has decided that it's time to tell Hope that he loves her [after much pushing from Shawn-Douglas, he promises he will tell her today.] The problem is, Hope's gone to the ski run. Bo isn't concerned until he runs into a ranger, who informs him of the avalanche danger. [Bo calls Hope on her cellular phone, but they have a bad connection and Hope assumes Bo is trying to get her off the slopes so she won't beat him skiing later. She hangs up.] In a panic, Bo runs to get Hope, but he's too late. She's already been buried under a ton of snow.

Next time: Bo refuses to throw in the towel. Stefano has an encounter with the woman in white.

Ê On Tuesday, Bo searches for Hope, but with no luck. When the ranger comes by, Bo tells him what has happened. Shaking his head, the ranger murmurs "if she was caught in that avalanche, odds are against her survival." Bo decides to form a search party. Kristen is thankful that Peter has promised to do his best not to call her. Unknown to Kristen, Stefano has the judge in his pocket, and is pressuring him to pressure Peter. Minutes later, Peter is forced to call Kristen to the stand. Kristen feels betrayed. Just as Peter asks Kristen if she believes John killed Tony, word comes in about Hope and the trial is called to a temporary halt so Hope's friends can search for her. Later, Stefano pretends to be asleep when the lady in white slips into his room. She's desperate to help her Johnny by retrieving that diary. Stefano grabs her arm and hisses "whatever you're trying to pull, you won't get away with it." The lady runs off, and because she's so terrified of Stefano, she won't go back, not even for Johnny.

On Wednesday, Bo searches alone until Jennifer, Jack, Abe, and Lexie show up. John is anxious to help and asks Peter to let him join the search. Peter is opposed, but Kristen begs him to reconsider. After all, she points out, John is skilled and experienced at tracking in these conditions [must have been one of his many past identities.] When Peter doesn't seem impressed, Kristen asks him as his sister, the sister he let down so badly when he called her to the stand against her wishes. Peter relents and soon Kristen and John are off and running [with Peter. He wants to go looking for Jack and Jenn, who have already paired off to search for Hope, but the ranger won't let Peter go alone since the approaching storm is worsening. When the ranger leaves, John tells Peter to go after Jennifer, since obviously he isn't concentrating on the search.] Once she's sure the coast is clear, Kristen tells John that as soon as Hope is found, "I want you to escape". John is stunned and tells Kristen that he want to prove his innocence. [Kristen is afraid he will be convicted -- it happens all the time. John refuses to discuss it further because they need to look for Hope.] Caroline throws an ice skating party at the pond [which looks to be a ten foot circle]. Carrie and Austin remember last year's party and how close they were. Sami watches, afraid that history will repeat itself. But by evening's end, Carrie realizes that she was able to enjoy being with Lucas, even though Austin was nearby. [Seeing this,] Austin doubles his efforts to support Will and Sami. [Shawn-Douglas is upset to hear the news about his mother missing. Bo promises him that he will find her. While searching, he finds a flower in bloom. He takes it as a sign that Hope is OK. She's actually buried under a tree somewhere, or at least that's what it looked like.]

On Thursday, Bo frantically searches for Hope until Abe finally forces him to go back to the shelter to rest. Bo regrets not having told Hope how much he loved her when he had the chance. [Abe says he can tell her when they find her. He also says Hope is fine if she found shelter. If she didn't.... she's gone already. Bo of course refuses to acknowledge this possibility.] When no one is looking, Bo slips out to resume his search. He doesn't care that the snowstorm is erasing all traces of Hope, or that he facing a dangerous and potentially futile mission. In Aremid, Celeste is still trying to stop Lexie from learning the truth about her parents. She finds out that the parrot man has Lexie's files from the orphanage [or at least she guesses as such], and decides to get it from him. But by the time Celeste arrives, Lexie already has the file in her hand [she came to see the parrot man to get some maps of the mountain, since he had been a guide in the past. He gives her the maps, and asks if there's anything else she wants. While he won't give her information about her parents directly, he tells her that what she wants to know is in the room someplace.] Celeste watches in horror as the girl she called her niece discovers that Celeste is really her mother. [Victor watches the tape Ivan made of Vivian for the dating service. In it, she admits to being lonely and afraid of never having a family, a home, and someone to love. Victor is touched - this was the Vivian he first fell in love with. When his lawyer arrives with paperwork regarding the divorce, Victor wonders if he should reconsider. But then he overhears Vivian tell Ivan that the only way she'll get Victor back is to make him jealous. Angry that Vivian is still the conniving woman she's always been, Victor calls her into his office and has her sign papers initiating the divorce. Ivan then reveals to Vivian that Victor saw her videotape.] Vivian realizes the only way to get back with Victor is by being honest. At that very moment, Kate is seen on the fishing boat that rescued her from the ocean some months ago. She is miserable, and once she returns to Salem, she's going to make Vivian feel the same way. [According to the captain, they'll be on land "pronto".]

Friday, January 26, 1996

Ê On Friday, Celeste denies being Lexie's mother, but then breaks down and admits that it's true. When Lexie asks why she gave her up, Celeste cries "Because I loved you and wanted you to have a good life." [She says that her sister and her husband had been trying to have children, and she knew they would give Lexie a good home.] Celeste runs out the door then, telling Lexie to forget she is her mother. Lexie realizes that she doesn't know who her father is. She checks the file but the space for her father's name is blank, so the mystery continues. [Abe returns to pick up more supplies and see if Lexie found more maps. He finds her sobbing and she explains what happened. He wants to stay with her, but she insists she'll be OK - she just needs some time to think.] The weather has turned treacherous, forcing John and Kristen to return to the shelter. [Peter joins them soon after. He was unable to find Jennifer and Jack. John tells Kristen that he feels good about the trial so far. Mike's and Laura's medical testimony was helpful, and he's certain that Kristen's unwavering belief in his innocence will win the case. Aside, Peter talks to Kristen. John doesn't realize that she has doubts.] Jack arrives a few minutes later carrying an exhausted Jennifer in his arms. The ranger stumbles in later with the news that it could be curtains for Hope if she isn't found soon. Abe returns without Bo and everyone realizes that Bo is now missing too. [Vivian heads over to Victor's prepared to be open and honest with him about her feelings. The butler says Victor isn't seeing anyone this evening, but Vivian hears baby Philip crying and barges in anyway. Philip is teething and Victor can't get him to stop crying. Vivian holds him and he is soon quiet.] Vivian is encouraged when Victor invites her to dinner. Meanwhile, Kate wants to be with her family and most of all, she wants revenge on Vivian. [The boat reaches land, but the captain locks Kate in the kitchen so she can't leave.] She bribes the first mate with jewelry and a promise of more money if he helps her. [He agrees.]
