Austin and Carrie run into Billie at the pub. She tells them about the audition but as she is leaving she drops her bag and Austin sees the coke. She swears she's not going to take it but Austin tells her not to come back to his apartment - he's throwing her out. Billie goes to her audition at Casey's but is so nervous she takes the coke. Bo just happens to turn up and sees her blow the audition. He takes her back to the station but doesn't arrest her. He tells her to go into rehab and then takes her back to Austin's. Carrie decides to take her in for a few days and later tells Austin it's for both Billie and him.
Carly tells Bo (who's growing his beard back) about Lawrence re-funding the med-van. As usual he does a bit of a sulk, but later tells her that he understands.
Lisanne professes her love for Lawrence and asks him if there's a chance for them. Lawrence tells her they may be but not while Viv hates her and can whisk Nikki away. Later Lisanne demands that Ivan call Vivian.
Jack and Jenn move in to the new place and Calliope turns up telling them that the NY producers want to offer Jenn mega-money to come back. Jenn refuses and when Calliope phones them they say they will move the show to Salem if Jenn agrees. Jack tells her to do what she really wants to do and she decides to take the job. Later when Julie comes round Jack talks to her and they arrange that he will work from home and look after Abby.

Bo tells Billie to go back down to Casey's and he organizes another audition for her. She goes and when he arrives she really sings well and gets the job. She tracks him down at the pub and hugs him until Carly arrives.
Lawrence decides to give Carly back the entire Von Leuschner estate and has Lisanne organize it. Then he takes the deed or whatever it is down to the pier and gives it to Carly. She is not sure about it but takes it to the pub and tells Bo, saying that she can do so much good with it. As usual he's not happy.
Carrie and Austin find Jesse who has been beaten up by loan sharks. They take him to Carly at the med-van where he is looked after. Austin decides that he wants to get out of it. They are back at the apartment when Tim arrives and Carrie has to tell him that she is with Austin now. Later Austin tells Tim that he wants to get out of the gambling but Tim argues that they're making lots of money. Austin tells him that from now they don't take anything more than a twenty dollar bet. However later Tim takes a thousand dollar bet.
Stella asks Roman if she can have the afternoon off and when he is not too keen she bursts into tears and tells him about Roger wanting a separation. He tells her to go home but she goes down to the warehouse and stocks up on bread and water. She also does some odd stuff with a message service....

Phillip gets home and finds a book that Kim has been reading about Multiple Personality Disorder. He asks her if she thinks that's what she might have. She says she doesn't know but the only way to find out is to do a self hypnosis. He helps her but when he asks for Lacey to show herself, Claire comes out and tells him that she got rid of Lacey. She also tells him that if he tells anyone about her, including Kim she will get rid of Kim permanently. When Kim comes around he tells her he got no response. He takes her upstairs to sleep but then later when he is reading the book she comes down and dressed up and then goes out. At the Ball she is recognized by the guy Claire slept with and Claire has to decide how to deal with him.
Vivian gets home but manages to avoid Lisanne till the Arts Council Benefit Ball. At the ball however, Lisanne tells her about her conversation with Marie-Helene and her son Nicholas.
Marlena is at Roman's office and still can't find her organizer. Stella tells them that if it turns up that she will let them know. Later Stella pulls out a gun. Roman tells Bo that he's not connecting with Marlena any more and Bo tells him to tell her how he feels. He decides to go home early to spend some time with her before the benefit. At the loft Hayley is watching one of Isabella's tapes. John sees it and after a while calls Marlena and tells her that he won't be coming tonight. He hangs up on her just as Roman gets home. Roman's visions of some private time are cut short when Marlena tells him she wants to go to John's early to persuade him to come. He is watching another tape when they arrive, the one where Izzy asks Marlena to look after John. Eventually John agrees to go but when they get to the ball, Marlena is on John's arm and the photographers assume he is her husband. Later at the unveiling of the portrait, Stella shows up and is happy when Roger acknowledges her. She decides that maybe she won't have to go through with it after all.....

The benefit continues. Claire talks to André and introduces him to Roman. Then later when Phillip comes in (after he's figured out where she went) she disappears off to the bathroom. Julie finds her there and she tells Phillip that she can't remember anything after she went upstairs back at home. He takes her back to the house and sends her off to make a cup of tea. Unfortunately she overhears him phoning a doctor and Claire manifests herself again. Not that Phillip realizes this as she begins to seduce him.
Marlena and Roman are dancing when the conversation turns to Roger. Roman tells her that Roger has asked Stella for a separation. Marlena doesn't know this and Roman makes the comment that perhaps she's created a bit of a monster. She asks him if they can have this conversation later. He goes and asks Stella to dance but she's not really keen. Later when Marlena is dancing with John and they go out to the balcony Stella remarks to Roman that men are like moths to Marlena's flame. Outside John tells Marlena that he's losing a little of Isabella every day and that's why he watches the tapes, to try to catch the essence of her, but she was so sick that it seems that he can't. Marlena suggests that maybe he can get Roger to do a portrait of her and he agrees that it's a good idea. Inside, Stella overhears some photographers saying how awful she looks and what a babe Dr. Evans is...
Vivian tries to call Marie-Helene but finds the number has been disconnected. Back in the room Lisanne tells her she has developed a headache and is going home and perhaps it would be smart if Viv developed a headache too. When she gets home Lisanne is waiting for her. She tells her everything she knows and demands that Viv help her in her quest to marry Lawrence. Vivian refuses to budge an inch and it turns first into a slanging match and than a physical fight. Nikki rushes downstairs and pulls Lisanne off Vivian. Unfortunately she falls on a statue of a cat (poetic justice?) and is killed. When Lawrence arrives home Vivian tells him not to even think about calling the police.....

The benefit ball *still* continues.
At La Alamain, Nikki comes downstairs to see if Lisanne is alright but Viv shepherds him back off upstairs. She tells Lawrence that it was Nikki who (accidentally) killed Lisanne but they can't let him take the blame for it as it will scar him for life. Lawrence and Ivan put her body in the cellar and Lawrence goes back upstairs but overhears Nikki tell Vivian that he heard Lisanne say that Lawrence is his father. Back downstairs Lawrence confronts Vivian and slowly begins to work out the truth for himself. She denies it and then starts clutching at her chest. He thinks it is a ploy and takes Nikki back upstairs. Downstairs Viv gets worse and Ivan rushes her to hospital.
Carrie and Austin are at the benefit and decide to split. Carrie tells Austin that she wants him to take her home but she doesn't want him to leave...
At the benefit Roman asks Marlena if she has finished with all her causes. Maybe they can go and talk about *their* problems. At home Marlena is packing when the phone rings. It's the airport saying her flight has been canceled and she has to take an earlier flight tonight. She tells Roman they can talk right now but he tells her he doesn't think she has enough time for him. They have a really painful fight in which Roman accuses her of turning away from their problems into her work. She tells him that for years she played second fiddle to his work and she never complained. He tells her that things haven't been the same as he got back. When she asks him what he means he tells her she's not the same woman he married. The Marlena that he married knew how to laugh and cry but she's built a wall around her that he can't penetrate. She tells him that it's not true. He asks her what she's afraid of - losing him again? She is almost crying as she says that she can't go through that kind of pain again, she though she would die when she lost him. He tells her that the only thing that got him through seven long years in that rat-hole of a prison was her and his love for her. He tells her that he thought that she knew he was still alive and that she was going to wait for him but then when he found out how fast she accepted John. She yells at him that none of them knew it wasn't him. He says that she brought John into their bed and made love to him. How could she not know? She tells him that she couldn't live without him and she willed herself to believe that John was him. She was living a fantasy - of the man that she first fell in love with - the man that promised he would never ever leave her. He says he didn't leave her. She argues that he did and when he came back he went right back undercover. He tells her it was for Bo. She ends up telling him that she's a little glad that she's leaving right about now. He can't believe that she wants to turn her back on all their problems and just walk away. He tells her that they are losing each other and the closest they have some to connecting of late is when she got drunk at Wings and it's sad that she has to be under the influence for the two of them to spend any time together. She tells him she doesn't remember hearing any complaints about the time they spend in bed together. He tells her he just wishes there was more of it. She gets upset at this point and tells him she is a working mother and what does he expect her to do - pop home at lunch time - turn up the TV at the weekend? He yells at her he's not just talking about her body - he wants the whole package - her brain her soul and her heart but she's not giving it to him - so what is she saving it for, or should he ask who? (Oh man this is *so* sad!) At this point she's had enough and she picks up her suitcase and leaves. The phone rings and Roman answers it. It's Stella and he tells her that Marlena has gone already. She takes off and follows the route that Marlena would have taken to the airport. Eventually she catches up to her and runs her off the road. Then she gets into Marlena's car and pulls the gun on her. She makes Marlena drive to the warehouse - Marlena complying because (I guess) she finally sees that Stella is unbalanced. They get to the warehouse and Stella tells her to get down into the pit. Marlena looks down and then looks back at Stella - the fear and anger evident on her face. He says she won't go down there and lunges at Stella. Stella pushes her back though and she falls through the hole and down a story into the darkness. Stella looks down and says that she didn't want for her to get hurt but she brought it on herself. She boards the pit up and then leaves. The episode fades out on Marlena's unmoving form....
