December 1984 Update
In agony over Roman's death, Bo leaves his brother's body on the beach to track down Stefano. By the time he reaches the top of the cliff, however, Stefano is gone. Bo circles back to get help at the campsite, but when he returns to the beach, Roman's body is missing!
Feeling responsible for his brother's death, Bo turns his anger inward, refusing to speak to Hope or anyone else. Back at the campsite, Anna helps locate the vital radio chip that Andre kept for himself, and with triumphant cheers they reach the coast guard. But their excitement is dampened by the pall of Roman and Daphne's deaths. Bo, sitting apart from the others, pulls away when Hope tries to comfort him. "This changes everything," he murmurs.
In Salem, everyone is initially ecstatic to learn that the survivors have been located. However, their spirits are dampened by later reports that three people are dead and one is missing. But the identities of the casualties remain a mystery for another day.
While Marlena waits anxiously to hear from Roman, some in Salem aren't so thrilled by news of the survivors. Larry, who won the election because voters sympathized with him for losing a wife and a baby, is especially upset since he has already spent half of Hope's estate And Alex half hopes Anna is the one "missing" because he sold Anna DiMera Designs for a song.
Back on the island, the coast guard arrives with food and medical supplies but regrets to inform the group that a heavy fog bank forces them to stay on the island one more night.
The next morning, as the Bradys, Hortons and Neil nervously wait to find out who survived - and who died -the castaways say goodbye to the island. Realizing that the moment of truth has come, Bo gets on the radio and reaches Marlena Ecstatic upon hearing his voice, Marlena and the others shout cheers of joy and bombard him with questions about Hope, Liz, Gene and the rest, but Bo cuts them off. "They're all okay," he says with tears welling in his eyes "It's Roman, he's...." Bo stops, unable to continue. Marlena freezes. "What happened to my husband?" she demands as the others in the room brace themselves. "He's deed," Bo finishes. "I tried to save him but I couldn't get there in time- Stefano killed him!"
The tragic news paralyzes Marlena with sorrow and sends Shawn into a rage. Later, in order to provide strength for Roman's family, Marlena encourages everyone to remember the good times they had with Roman. Although she manages a smile for the others, alone at home, Marlena breaks down.
Meanwhile, Stefano basks in the sun at his island retreat in the Caribbean, elated because not only has he retrieved one of the prisms, but he also has Roman Brady's body as well. "Now I have you right where I want you," Stefano gloats, standing right over Roman's corpse.
Meanwhile, the survivors of the crash arrive at the airport to a warm reception by friends and family. But with Salem's hero, Roman Brady, dead, the celebration is a somber one. Missing, too, from the reception is Bo. (On the coast guard ship, Bo was informed that the I.S.A. requested his presence at a military base in South Carolina regarding the nature of Roman's death). Not ready to face his family, Bo goes and is surprised to see Shane at the base. "We need you to help us Stefano," Shane insists. "We need you because we know how much you hate him for killing your brother." Feeling defeated, Bo says he'll think about it.
At the "welcome home" reception, a televised event, publicity minded Lt. Governor Welch moves to embrace his "almost-lost loving" wife but the sight of him turns Hope's stomach. "Aren't you going to give a congratulatory hug to Salem's new Lt. Governor?" Larry asks sarcastically. Shocked by this news and remembering everything she put up with during the previous months from Larry, Will, and the cartel, Hope announces to reporters that she has "something special" she'd like to say about her husband. Taking the podium as Larry holds his breath with Gwen nonchalantly at his side, Hope proceeds to expose Larry's connection to the power-hungry cartel that was eager to get Mr. Welch elected president. "All this forced me to fake my pregnancy," Hope announces, "to keep away from that snake I hate him, but I love Bo Brady." While Larry stands stone-faced, Hope declares that she and Bo will be married as soon as possible. Bo arrives and is furious with her. "I told you, things have changed," he insists.
Later, Megan meets with her father, Stefano, in a secret place. He tells her of his ingenious plan to get him the third prism from the Soviet Union and save his life. All that 'would be left is to find the first prism lost in the swamps of Cajun Country. Stefano orders Honeycutt to go to New Orleans. She is to dredge the bayous if she has to, but she must bring back that prism Stefano commands. Shane, who has been following Honeycutt since her return from the island, follows her to Louisiana and watches as she recovers the prism from some poachers who discovered the crystal in the belly of an alligator. Shane lets Honeycutt take it so that he may trace the prism to its ultimate destination: Stefano DiMera!
Hope's shocking revelation of Larry's corrupt political ties forces the Lt. Governor to resign in humiliation later, when he returns home to find Hope packing her bags, Larry loses his temper and begins attacking her. Alice steps in warning that if he ever goes near her again she won't be responsible for what she does. ignoring Mrs. Horton, Larry continues threatening Hope. "You can't ruin my career -- my life--and think you can get away with it," Larry persists. "You're still my wife and I'm going to teach you a lesson." These are Larry's last words before Alice hits him on his jaw, stunning him into silence! Fuming, Larry leaves to see Gwen - the only one who'll stand by him.
Grief stricken over his brother's death, Bo returns to his family to mourn Roman. However, Bo finds reminiscing about the good old times difficult since there weren't that many between him and Roman. Bo always walked in Roman's shadow. Uncomfortable with his family, Bo goes to see Marlena to apologize for letting her husband die. Softly, Marlena assures the young Brady that he mustn't blame himself for events out of his control. "Sometimes this just happen and we have to learn to accept them," Marlena sympathizes. Tortured by the truth, Bo confesses, "I shouldn't have left him lying on the beach. When I went back to him, his body was gone," Bo reveals. Her sadness turning to rage,, Marlena yells tear-fully, "How dare you leave my husband to be washed out to sea!" Feeling more guilty than ever, Bo gets on his motorcycle and speeds out of Salem with tears in his eyes.
Meanwhile, Anna no sooner gets her nails and hair done when Alex pops the news about selling her design business. 'You're ruthless, Alex ..... you couldn't wait to find out if we were really dead," Anna shouts, losing her temper. "Business is an entirely different kind of survival than your stint on the island, my dear," Alex says. When Anna later discovers Alex sold her company through less than legitimate channels, she presses for her share of the sale. "I'll give you $100,000 if you promise to keep your mouth shut," Alex snarls. Broke and not on very good terms with Tony since the "jungle queen" came into his life, Anna takes the money.
Jasmine is overwhelmed and frightened by the big city Tony teaches her how to use some of the strange gadgets of the twentieth century, such as the television and the toaster. Even Anna volunteers to take her shopping. "This is a credit card," Anna explains demonstrating for Jasmine its most important function. "We'll buy you this plaid skirt to go with these wonderfully colorful stripes," Anna says innocently. Satisfied, Anna returns Jasmine to Tony. The Count isn't the least bit amused with Anna's game and he lets her have it.
Overcoming his anger over losing his son, Shawn decides to have an old-fashioned wake for Roman "Plenty of good spirited fun is what Roman would have wanted," Shawn tells his family. "We'll celebrate the good times and all the joy our son brought to us" Tormented by guilt and feeling pressure from Diane to help her get Zachary beck, from Shane to go after Stefano, and from Hope to get married Bo decides to miss the wake. He calls Hope for support, but though she is understanding and gentle 'with him she senses that Bo is drifting away from her. When Hope tries to reason that maybe they should concentrate on the future, like setting a wedding date, Bo explodes. "While I 'was saving you from the yacht, I could have been helping my brother!" Shocked and hurt by this, Hope wonders, "How can you blame me for Roman's death? My life was in danger,- too." Sorry for what lie said but unable to deal 'with the pressure Bo returns to his apartment and blasts the stereo in an unsuccessful attempt to drown out the pain When his mother finds out he 'won't be coming to Roman's wake, she goes to Bo to try' to change his mind. Unable to under-stand the pressure he's under, or the depth of Bo and Roman's sibling rivalry, Caroline loses her temper and says things to Bo she really doesn't mean. 'You know how much this means to your father... it would kill him if you didn't show up. Do you want to kill him, too?" Bo can't take any more and he takes off again as everyone gathers at Marlena's for the wake.
Somber but smiling, Roman's friends and relatives talk over the old times, sing songs and make toasts but they all wonder where Bo is. During the wake, Eric, shows up to pay respects. Seeing him, Kimberly is paralyzed with fear. Although her reaction escapes most of the others, Shane picks up on it and follows Kimberly to the boat docks where she slips out soon after Eric arrives. "What did he do to you to make you bristle so when you see him? Shane asks gently. But Kimberly dodges, keeping the secret inside her.
Alone at Shenanigans, Bo tries to sort out what he should do. Only one solution comes to him--get Stefano! He finally goes to the wake where his father, who had not given up on him, greets his son with open arms. "I knew you'd come--you're a Brady--and that's the most important thing," Shawn says proudly. Bo agrees but announces that his first priority is to get Stefano. Marlena overhears this and takes her stand. "Another death won't change things. But your family needs you right now more than ever." A confused Bo tentatively decides to stay to become more a part of his family.
Carlo's Fantasy Materializes!
Holding in his suspicions about Carlo and his wife's affair, Neil has a cool reunion with Liz after the island ordeal. Finally, Dr. Curtis confronts Liz about the letter from Carlo he found in her dresser. Liz has no knowledge of the letter, but Carlo, who's there, confesses it was a fantasy he was playing out before the crash. Neil's jealousy won't allow him to believe Carlo and he accuses the two of sleeping together on the island. Liz defends Carlo, sickening Neil all the more, and he storms out to booze it up at the local bar. Devastated by Neil's reaction to her, compounded by Carlo bringing up Neil's mysterious past once again, Liz heads for the liquor cabinet, too. "Since we've been blamed for making love anyway, we might as well really give him something to be mad about," Carlo says, taking advantage of her vulnerable state. He carries her upstairs and they make passionate love! At the bar, Neil gets control of himself and realizes how immature he was for wrongly accusing Liz. Wanting to apologize so they can get back to the love they shared before Carlo stepped into their lives, Neil heads home to his loving wife.
