After Mickey tells Don about the allegations made against Alex and Chandler, Don defends his employer. Later, he feels compelled to see Jarvis and Chandler. He asks them if there is any truth to the rumor that they were in collusion with Alex in undermining Chris' authority of the plant. When the men proclaim their innocence, Don agrees to go on working for them. But he assures them if he finds out they are lying, he will quit. After Don leaves, Chandler remarks, "I think success has gone to Don's head. We are going to have to keep an eye on him."
Jealous of Carol, Jessica makes up her mind to ignore Joshua. When she learns she has won a scholarship to college because she passed her entrance exams with high scores, Jessica rushes to tell Marie. Todd is thrilled when he learns he passed his exams. Jessica tells Todd that she will be sharing an apartment with Sally Kirk, the unmarried pregnant girl who works at the clinic.
After hesitating for a long time, Mary gives in and sells the plant to Chandler. She gets a huge monetary settlement, but her heart is broken. She promises Chris that she will use her money to invest, and then build up a fortune to buy back her father's company. When she does, she will use her fortune to "make Alex pay for everything he's done to me."
Chris refuses to work with Chandler and tells Don he only wants a cash settlement and the rights to the solar generator. Don tells him he is being foolish for giving up his royalties from the generator. Chris stresses his need for cash to start a new business with Mike. Leslie also quits the plant.
David's Goodbye
Julie is deeply saddened when she learns that David and Scotty left town. She blames herself for not being close to David. When David calls her from out of town, he refuses to say where he is. Near tears, he tells her, "I called to say good-bye. It will be better with me out of the way." Julie cries when David hangs up the phone.
Miserable after David leaves, Trish is in no mood to sing. But she forces herself when the agent comes to the club. He is very impressed with Trish!
Julie informs Trish about David's call. She tells her daughter-in-law that David left to give her a chance to pursue her career. Julie feels he is wrong and asks Trish to call the police. She fears some tragedy may come to David and Scotty since he has been drinking. Instead of calling the police, Trish hires a private investigator through Mickey's new law partner, young, Victoria Wallace. She is supervising the office while Mickey is out of town.
Although Leslie accuses Chris of shuttling her out of his life, he still wants to marry her. He explains losing the plant is like losing his family.
Julie leaves the hospital and stays with Alice and Tom. Her good spirits fade when Lee visits her. Alone in the house, Julie agrees to talk to her. Lee tells Julie that Doug is the only man she ever loved. "I will always love him! Doug loved me very much, he just changed," Lee declares. She begs Julie not to take Doug away. Before leaving. Lee screams, "You can make it on your own. I don't want to live without Doug!"
Cunning
Lee throws away the pills Neil gave her and visits his office. He tells her that her blood pressure is much higher, but she insists she is taking her pills. Neil warns her that she might wind up in the hospital again. Lee is pleased. She feels Doug will come back to her when he learns she is ill. Meanwhile, Lee has Victoria rewrite the divorce statement. She does not want Doug to give her such a large settlement. Doug and Julie realize Lee is only stalling.
With Mickey out of town, Maggie goes to Doug's club alone. A football star, Kyle McCullough, asks her to spin the roulette wheel for him. She agrees and wins. Kyle kisses her and calls her Lady Luck. The next night he sits at Maggie's table (uninvited). Attracted to her, Kyle asks Maggie to go for a ride in the moonlight with him. She refuses and he starts to drink. Later that night, Maggie learns Kyle's car crashed. He is seriously hurt and may never walk again. Maggie takes a strong interest in Kyle and, along with his friend, waits by his bedside.
Chandler orders Alex to clear out his office at the plant. In time he will make him an official offer to stay. Alex tells him he'd better keep his word. Jarvis points out to Chandler that David must be stopped before he can hurt them. Alex warns them not to harm David or Scotty. After Alex leaves, Jarvis and Chandler agree they will have to dispose of Alex and David.
Liz sneaks away from the campaign trail to be with Neil. She saw things that horrified her--slums, and starving children. "Knowing you has made me look at the rest of the world," she says. After they spend the night together, Neil warns her that Chandler will be very angry with her.
Disappointed
Todd informs Joshua he is throwing a surprise disco party to celebrate Jessica's scholarship. He tells Joshua to be sure to bring Carol! Todd visits Jessica's new apartment and invites her, Mike, and Sally to a disco party. When they show up, Jessica is surprised to learn the party is in her honor. She is thrilled when Joshua gifts her with a book his mother gave him. But when she sees Carol, she is disappointed.
Liz visits her father's office and promises not to leave the campaign again. Chandler calls her a tramp and insists she give up Neil. Liz storms out of his office in tears. Chandler's day is brightened when he learns Todd passed his college entrance exams. He rewards his son with a check.
Doug is furious when he learns that Lee upset Julie. He does not believe Lee is suicidal.
Hearing that the man suspected of shooting Julie has been trailed to Dallas and is expected to be arrested within 24 hours, Lee takes more of her tranquilizers. Since she already had two prescriptions filled, her doctor (not Neil) is reluctant to give her another one. He finally agrees, telling her it will be her last one.
After learning that Johnny is going to be put in a state orphanage, Don and Marlena decide to bring him home. They are not ready to adopt him, but they will take care of him. Johnny is very happy.
A Shocking Discovery
Jessica is pleased with a microscope that Tom gives her to celebrate her scholarship. She is equally pleased with a silver chain for her medallion from Marie and Alice. When Marie sees the medallion, she is shocked. She recognizes it! The date on the object is very special to her. As she holds it, she recalls the time she gave her baby up for adoption and asked the doctor to make sure that the medallion was given to her child! She wanted her daughter to have something from her real mother.
Although Mary is not asking Alex for alimony, she requests a percentage of his future earnings.
Now that Marie knows Jessica is her daughter, she finds it difficult to face her. When Jessica realizes Marie is pulling away from her, she asks what is wrong. Marie tells the girl that from now on there has to be a distance between them. As a nun, she should never have let Jessica become so close to her. Jessica leaves, crying. Later, she asks Alice why Marie is angry at her. Alice is puzzled.
Guilt-ridden, Marie goes to the hospital chapel to pray for guidance. She is not sure what her next step should be. When Marie sees that Jessica and Alex have grown close, she is upset. She asks Alex not to let Jessica get too attached to him. Marie expresses her fear of Jessica becoming infatuated with Alex. He cannot understand why she is so worried. Marie had encouraged him to take Jessica out on the town to celebrate her scholarship. Alex assures Marie that he only has a fatherly interest in Jessica.
Alex takes Jessica to Doug's club. When Joshua sees the couple, he is very surprised. Alex leaves Jessica at their table to gamble in the next room. While he is winning a bundle, Joshua asks Jessica why she is with Alex. She explains his role as her benefactor.
At the hospital, Jessica asks Alex to co-sign her application for a bank loan. He refuses. Alex wants to give her the money. Proud and independent, Jessica tells him she wants to make it on her own. Alex finds her attitude commendable and signs the application. Jessica is very grateful to him.
The Wrong Man
In Dallas, the man suspected of shooting Julie has been arrested. The local police call Joshua and ask him to look at pictures of convicts to see if he can identify the attacker. Joshua identifies a picture of Brent as the man who shot Julie. The lieutenant tells him he is not the man in custody. He relates that Brent has several aliases and was arrested for pimping, not murder. But Joshua insists Brent is the attacker.
After Carol learns about Brent, she tells Joshua she cannot recall the man. Later that day, Joshua and Carol go swimming. When they return to her apartment, they drink by the fireplace. Joshua kisses her and the couple make love.
When Chandler makes it clear to Jessica that he expects her and Todd to be very good friends, she explains that she has no interest in his son. She is only Todd's friend. She knows Chandler disapproves of Cassie and yells, "Cassie loves Todd. If you think I'm going to break them up, you're mistaken!" She returns Chandler's check and quits as Todd's tutor. Chandler tells his son that the girl was rude. But Todd is mystified by Jessica's refusal to continue the tutoring and asks her what happened. When she explains, Todd realizes he does not have a chance with her and agrees to just be her friend.
Just before Lee is to reenter the hospital because her blood pressure is extremely high, she visits Julie. And again, Julie is alone! Ill, Lee begs Julie to give her another chance with Doug. She screams that Julie owes her that much. Julie insists that Lee leave, but the woman remains, ranting and raving. To escape from Lee, Julie heads for the front door. Lee follows and picks up a fireplace poker! As she is about to strike Julie, Lee is overtaken by a stroke.
Neil calls Doug to tell him the bad news. Naturally, Doug is shocked. Neil blames Lee's condition on the fact that she was apparently mixing drugs. He also suspects she was not taking the medication he prescribed. Another doctor tells Doug that Lee's left side is paralyzed. She might have a speech defect and will definitely require rigorous therapy to regain the use of her limbs.
When Doug blames himself for Lee's condition, Neil points out that Lee caused her own misery. She made no attempt to help herself. Doug is sure that Julie is also feeling guilty about Lee. When he sees Julie, she tells him she cannot think of marrying him now. Despite her bitter feelings towards Lee, she feels sorry for her.
Mike tells Chris and Leslie he is selling his house and will share in the expense of their new business venture. He is going to rent an apartment in Sally ands Jessica's building. Chris tells his two business associates he wants them to look at a marina on the North Shore. There is a house boat there they can convert into an office. When Leslie and Mike see the site, they tell Chris it is perfect and he decides to buy it. The landlady points out that due to re-zoning, their property is going to be very valuable!
Will Alex buy?
Alex asks a friend at the bank to approve Jessica's loan without delay and the man agrees. He advises Alex to use his recent deposit (the money he won gambling at Doug's club) to purchase land in the North Shore. They are re-zoning and if Alex buys the land cheap, he can make a huge profit!
Mary visits Trish to tell her that Alex may try to prevent David from ever returning to Salem. She explains that David can testify against Alex. Mary then warns Alex to make sure that David and Scotty stay healthy.
Trish's new agent tells her if the record she just made is a hit, she will have to go on an extended tour. She was not aware she would have to leave Salem. Trish gets a letter from David.
When Chris applies for a loan at the bank, the banker (Alex's friend) calls Alex as Chris' reference. Alex informs him that Chris is suspected of arson at the plant.
