Chris Kositcheck just doesn't give up! Despite Mary continually spurning his advances, he doesn't let that faze him! He goes full steam ahead in his own disarming way -- and not because of the check Phyllis wrote out to him, either! No, quite insulted, not only for himself, but for Mary; Chris forthrightly tears the check up right in front of Phyllis -- then promptly returns to Mary! Will Mary succumb to Chris' amorous advances? He seems truly concerned for her. He sees in her an unhealthy need to constantly win her father's approval -- almost to the point of jealousy where other women in her father's life are concerned -- and he also recognizes that she has been hurt very badly by another man. Will Chris take charge?
Meanwhile, Linda has invited Tommy to dinner and flatly rejects his marriage proposal! She tells him she is considering working for Bob because she must think of Melissa's future. She says it would be different if he were in private practice -- and Tommy, while wanting to marry her, has no intention of going into private practice . . .
With Jean finally leaving Fred, she takes up a temporary residence at the Shelter. She also gets a job in Mickey's office, and, ultimately, is able to get herself and Billy their own little apartment! Jean is just gaining some of the strength and confidence she needs, when she blows it! Feeling sorry for Fred, and feeling certain they can work it out when he lies to her that he will indeed seek professional help, Jean goes back to him for a trial weekend! But Fred wants more! He wants her to give up her job, her apartment, her friendship with Maggie, and return to the old life with him!
BLOWUP!
Jean tries to reason with him that they must take this slowly and that he must get professional help; but Fred's temper is beginning to rise. Finally, a frightened Jean grabs her bags and rushes out of the apartment. Fred is equally determined not to let her go, and there is a struggle on the staircase -- and Fred goes tumbling down -- unconscious! Will he be alright? Bill and Linda and Mickey and Maggie, who were enjoying dinner together, take Fred to the hospital, where Walter Griffin gives Bill a hard time over the proper treatment for Fred.
Marlena, meantime, is doing much better. Don is happy with her progress, and also is happy that soon Dr. Paul Whitman will be able to leave. But neither Marlena nor Paul envision Paul leaving Marlena too soon. They both insist that despite their previous relationship, this one is purely professional, and that Paul must stay as long as Marlena needs him. Still, Don is jealous, despite both Marlena's and Paul's reassurance to Don that Marlena loves Don. Samantha, meanwhile, has been released in the custody of her parents, who flew down from Colorado to be with her.
CLOSING NIGHT
Doug and Julie have returned from their New England vacation. But it's a poignant return. Indeed, when Doug sings that night, it might be the last time he will ever set foot in "Doug's Place" again! Julie has gotten her temporary license to run the place, and hopefully, when they can again serve liquor, their patrons will return. And more bad news! Larry Atwood has signed Jeri Clayton to sing over at his new club! And daughter Trish, so immersed with Timothy, has no plans of resuming her singing career at Doug's Place! And isn't Trish overdoing it with the baby? She refuses to let David care for Timmy, and seems to have lost sight of David's needs! She even invites Toni to live with them while she maintains her hospital vigil while Naiobi is in the incubator! There is no longer any privacy for the newlyweds!
And is staid Dr. Griffin entertaining romantic thoughts concerning Sister Marie? Although he originally asked Sister Marie to give Patty some much needed maternal guidance, he finds himself drawn to her, telling her how he has totally immersed himself in his work since his wife died . . .
But how much can Marie help Patty while Patty is still under the influence of Ron? Patty was doing well, and her father gave her permission to go to the school dance if she came straight home afterward. Well she did, but, finding a note from Walter that he was in surgery and wouldn't be home for hours, Patty lets Ron persuade her to join the gang at a local hangout . . .
And Phyllis has left Neil! No longer able to cope with his years of infidelity, and the final blow of his affair with Mary; she tells both him and Mary she is leaving -- and does! Mary is concerned, and Neil, believe it or not, seems heartbroken!
Fred is in a bad way! He needs very delicate brain surgery if he is to survive! Bill gets Kate as the anesthesiologist for the operation, and also tries to get Walter Griffin to perform the surgery, as he is already on duty anyway; but Walter refuses. He wants to get home to see if Ron brought Patty home on time, and, instead, tells Bill to get young Rick Stevens for the case! Bill doesn't think that is a good idea, as Rick is just a second year resident -- still wet behind the ears -- but he must obey Walter's orders.
When Fred is ready for surgery, Kate and Bill await Rick. Bill is there to help talk Rick through the surgery, if necessary, as it is a very delicate operation, and Bill has performed literally hundreds in his long and illustrious career. But what's this? Rick Stevens comes in to perform the surgery; but, quite literally, cannot! He is by no means in any condition to perform any kind of surgery -- let alone one as delicate as this, which he has never before performed! Still, if the patient is to be saved, it must be done. Bill tries to talk the young resident through -- to guide him -- but all to no avail! He finally bolts out the operating door, despite Bill calling him to return, as it's a matter of life and death. At this point, Bill decides that if Fred is to be saved, he must perform the operation himself. Kate says he musn't attempt it because of his hand; but Bill assures her his hand is no longer incapacited, he's done the surgery hundreds of times, and he's the only surgeon available. Kate agrees to assist.
TEMPERS FLARE!
A nervous Rick, meantime, realizing that because of his irresponsibility he may lose his medical career, calls Walter at home and tells him that Bill wouldn't let him perform the surgery -- that Bill ordered him out of the room and proceeded to operate himself! Walter is outraged, and, because he's still tied up trying to track down Patty (indeed, he's got the police out looking for her and Ron), tells Rick to call Greg Peters. When Greg hears that Bill is operating, he rushes to the hospital immediately. When he gets there, he finds that the operation was an outstanding success, and Fred is already in the recovery room! But that doesn't appease Greg!
Greg has both Bill and Kate suspended from the staff while they await a hearing with the Medical Board of Inquiry. Both his wife Amanda and colleague Linda are very angry with the action Greg has taken against Bill and Kate. The feel he's being unfair. Bill, meantime, well aware that this could be the end of their careers, tries to persuade Kate to tell the Board that he forced her to assist him; but she quite adamantly refuses. She is on Bill's side in this matter, and will not back out.
And what an effect all this is having on Jean! She spends all her time at Fred's bedside, blaming herself, and vowing never again to leave him!
And the whole Marlena/Samantha saga seems to have finally ended! At the trial, Samantha insisted on testifying, and broke down before everyone. If it wasn't clear before, it is now quite clear to all concerned --including Marlena -- that Samantha is indeed very sick and needs help. Finally, as Marlena's parents set out to drop Sam off at the sanitarium on their way back to Chicago, they stop off to say goodbye to Marlena. Indeed, Marlena and Sam have a long, emotional goodbye. Marlena tells Sam she will visit her often at the sanitarium, and that she will be well soon. Sam seems to realize that such a move is the best thing for her. Their parting is a tearful, bittersweet one, with the hope of Sam's recovery the only ray of light on this dark day . . .
But Sam may have wrought more mayhem than she anticipated! Although Paul's work is officially over now, and he tells Marlena that her best days are ahead of her, and should be spent in the company of Don, who loves her so much; Marlena still dwells on her days as a student and her affair with her professor -- Paul Whitman! Oh, Don, you may have difficult times ahead with Marlena!
The Board of Inquiry has terminated Bill and Kate! They have been kicked off the staff of the hospital! Everyone is very upset about such an unfair decision based, of course, on young Rick Stevens' lying! But Bill is the most upset -- though not for himself! He's fighting to have Kate reinstated! He goes to see Mickey about handling the legal end for Kate's reinstatement, but Kate is staunchly against it. She feels, and Mickey agrees, that Mickey should handle an appeal for both Kate and Bill. After the meeting, Bill takes Kate to lunch, and then, with them both being out of work and with an entire afternoon to kill, he takes her to a movie and then walks her home! When Bill return, home that evening and tells Laura about his day especially walking Kate home through the autumn leaves -- he remarks that he felt like a high school kid again! A wistful Laura remarks that it's been a long time since they went to a movie or took a walk together. Laura seems concerned about the situation, and she has a right to be! The unfortunate situation is throwing Bill and Kate together (and Kate is so sympathetic and understanding of Bill's situation) and, with so much time on their hands, where will these afternoon walks lead?
Laura, meantime, continues to work hard, and colleague Marlena has slipped back into her old routine beautifully. In fact, it may have been the best thing for Marlena, as now her relationship with Don is humming along smoothly, also! Evidently, even Samantha's malicious antics cannot stop the course of true love!
Julie has finally persuaded Trish to sing at Doug's Place two nights a week! And, once she began rehearsals, Trish realized how much she loves singing, and she is happier than she has been in a long time. David is fully supportive of her career decision. At first, he was terribly possessive, not wanting her to perform in fear of a lot of men at the club flirting with her and coming on to her. But then, seeing how happy singing makes her, and that Timmy won't suffer, David gives Trish all his love and support. Yes, these two really seem to be making a successful marriage. This seems a real case of true love actually blossoming after the wedding vows!
TRUST NO ONE!
Doug, meantime, is having a hard time watching the operation of the club from the sidelines. He decides to take a singing engagement in Detroit for a few days. Doug and Julie will miss each other, but that's not the worst of it! You see, before Trish agreed to return to the club, Jeri (who, incidentally, confided in Trish that she has quite a crush on one Mr. Larry Atwood!) went to Larry to see about getting out of her exclusive contract with him to help out Doug. In doing so, she innocently mentioned that Doug was out of town for a few days! Larry tells Jeri he would love to accommodate her, but his business partners wouldn't let Jeri slip through their fingers.
And has Larry infiltrated Doug's Place with some well-placed spies? One of th waiters is making secretive phone calls about the club to -- whom? -- Larry? Indeed, all of a sudden, on a busy night, the staff at Doug's Place pulls a wildcat strike! Not wanting to worry Doug, and unable to reach Mickey, Julie, swallowing both her pride and misgivings, contacts Larry for help! Larry quite chivalrously helps out; but Julie is still worried, and asks Robert not to tell Doug!
And Linda has gone to work for Bob! Bob loves having her there (they share intimate little luncheons, etc.) but he is frustrated that she won't go out with him at night. But Linda, playing the proper executive assistant, tells Bob she makes it a policy never to mix business and pleasure. Hopefully for Linda, that will frustrate Bob enough marry her! Meantime, Bob is quite deluded into thinking that Linda and Mary get along, famously. Quite the opposite! Linda is trying to usurp Mary's position in the company! Luckily for Mary, she has the attention of a strong and caring man to see her through all this -- Chris Kositcheck! Besides being physically attracted to Mary, Chris really cares for her. Indeed, in his engaging and boyish ways, he charms her into having Thanksgiving dinner with his boisterous clan, and now he's asking her to come for Christmas! Will she accept?
Surprisingly, Walter wants to step down as head of the Department of Medicine, and Greg goes to talk to Tom about Tom's reinstatement. But Fred, paralyzed from the waist down, (though Laura feels it's psychosomatic) is planning a malpractice suit!
Mickey talks to Greg and convinces him that Bill and Kate are telling the truth and young Rick Stevens is lying to protect himself. Greg then tells Walter he plans to reconvene the Board of Inquiry. Greg angrily charges that the Board was misled into thinking Bill was only a first year anesthesiologist resident, ignoring the fact that before his handicap he had a long and distinguished career as a brilliant surgeon!
Greg is angry that Walter still believes Rick Stevens; but he is even angrier when he learns that Rick has left for Chicago, with Walter's recommendation, to finish his residency! He orders Walter to get Rick back to Salem!
Fred is back home, now; but he's still causing trouble. He has forbidden Jean to see Maggie, and he has hired Michael Langford, a prominent malpractice surgeon, to sue both Bill and the hospital!
