Linda continues to play Bob and Tommy against one another. Poor Tommy keeps approaching Linda to see if she has reached a decision concerning his marriage proposal, and she keeps stalling for time. She is trying to use Tommy's proposal (and what she pretends is her impending acceptance!) as a weapon to push Bob into popping the question! After another nice evening together, Bob again praises Linda for tier role as hostess at his party for Gen. Rollins -- and his thanks to her come in the form of a very expensive jewelled necklace! But Linda tells him she cannot accept such a personal gift, as it would be a slap in the face to Tommy.
Bob is quite disturbed to hear Linda say she is seriously considering the man's proposal-even though she admits she doesn't love him-and Linda tells him she also has her own and her child's security to think about. She tells Bob she really doesn't want to work anymore. She says she wants to spend more time with Melissa, and, quite frankly, she now finds giving a dinner party (such as the one she, hosted for Gen. Rollins) just as rewarding as she once found her work! Bob is quite upset at the prospect of losing Linda. He asks her if she would consider another man's proposal. Linda's eyes gleam (she's getting the man where she wants him!) and she replies mysteriotisly that that all depends on who the man is . . . <p>
Laura and Don are in Laura's office discussing "Marlena" when Laura decides the only thing for her to do is go over and see "Marlena". Neither Don nor Laura can understand her behavior, and they've taken just about as much as they can take. When Don leaves, Laura calls "Marlena" and doesn't request a visit, but announces that she will be right over! "Mariena" is distressed at such an impending visit, of course, but luckily is saved by the "stork," of all things!
BABY ON ITS WAY
It seems Trish went into labor while on an autumn picnic with David, and he rushed her over to "Marlena's" house! Upon their request, she agrees to accompany the young couple to the hospital, leaving a handwritten note on the door for Laura!
When Laura arrives she takes the note, and ultimately ends up giving it to Don-when will he make the discovery that "Marlena's" handwriting is not really Marlena's handwriting at all! Don had just gotten off the phone (or rather, was abruptly cut off!) after a disturbing conversation with "Marlena." Don had rung "Marlena" up to try and salvage what was left of their relationship, only to find a strange man (Chris!) answering the phone. Don was quite rightly upset to find that "Marlena" was entertaining another man in her apartment, when Don thought that he and "Marlena" and an exclusive, all-encompassing relationship with each other! After "Marlena" hangs tip on him, Don, perplexed and in deep thought, takes out the "Marlena" door message and the long letter the real Marlena had smuggled to him. He rereads the part where, as proof of her identity, Marlena reiterates intimate details of their relationship that no one else could possibly know. Don also realizes that "Marlena's" door message is definitely not Marlena's handwriting, and that, although shaky , the smuggled letter's handwriting could very well be Marlena's! But Don is still stumped!
IT'S A BOY!
The real Marlena, meantime, in her drugged and fuzzy mental state, is at least having the truth brought to her from her subconscious! She dreams of her relationship with Don, and even (though she cannot remember why) asks her nurse to get Dr. Whitman!
Trish had a healthy baby boy! She and David seemed the picture of wedded bliss, and named their family newcomer Timothy. Throughout her long labor, a wistful and lonely Michael had maintained a park bench vigil outside the hospital. Late that night, when everyone is gone, he goes to see Trish. But poor Trish can't even face him (or is it her emotions?) and will not look at him. She tells him to get out and leave her alone. She tells him that she and David and the baby deserve happiness, and Michael musn't mar it . . .
Phyl is home from the pro-am tournament, and Neil wants her very much; but now Phyl is turning the tables on Neil! She rejects all his advances (he almost rapes her in his passion!); finally sending him, angry and desolate, into a drunken neighborhood joumey; where first he tries to come on to his secretary while her fiance is away, ultimately ending up at "Marlena's!"
At work the next day following his midnight drinking spree, Neil still can't understand why Betty wants to quit. She tells him that after barging into her apartment while her fiance was away was the last straw.
And what is the last straw for Neil? Neil had made a luncheon date with Phyl to try and iron out the wrinkle in their relationship, but Phyl rings him up from Maty's office to cancel. When they hang up, Neil reaches in his desk drawer for a bottle of liquor to drown out all the pressing realities!
And what is Phyl up to? Is she guilty of sending out a false message for Chris to come see Mary immediately? After hanging up on Neil, and just as she is leaving, Phyl and Mary are interrupted by Chris-in a rush and obviously agitated -- barging into Mary's office! Phyl leaves immediately, coyly implying that Chris and Mary would like to be alone, and a fuming Chris confronts Mary.
Why did she leave an "S.O.S." for him to rush over to see her immediately? What's so important? He had to leave the site just to come see her, and if anything should happen at the site while he's away, heaven forbid, it will be his fault!
Mary is equally furious with Chris! She tells him he has no right to tear into her about a phone message, because she never sent one! She tells him his secretary must have made a mistake. He tells her his secretary doesn't make a mistake. Nothing is resolved. The two have reached an impasse, and Chris finally stalks out. After he leaves, Mary begins to wonder. Did someone make such a call using her name? Who would do such a thing?
TENUOUS BEGINNING
As luck would have it, one of the workers was injured while Chris was gone. He was taken to the hospital, and, as more luck would have it, Michael goes to visit the man, and who should he run into but Trish, Timothy and David leaving the hospital! David doesn't believe that Michael was there to see a friend . . . and the incident causes more friction between Trish and David. David wants to know why Trish never told her about Michael visiting her in the hospital late that night. He also is concerned that Trish is so possessive of Timothy. Trish won't let David do anything concerning the care of the baby! It's like poor David is an outsider in his own home!
Dr. Griffin wants to put Patty in a parochial school. He doesn't like her hanging around with Ron. He has often interrupted the two kids necking on the couch, and he believes only the worst. He does not trust his daughter, and he trusts Ron even less. And poor Patty is caught in the middle! Dr. Griffin says don't listen to Ron, and Ron tells her not to obey her father!
Amanda voices her discontent to Greg over his long working hours. She feels they don't get out enough to socialize. Greg is sorry and agrees to rectify the situation. In fact, he takes her out that very night-to Doug's place. The atmosphere there wasn't too cheery, however. In fact, the dismal mood matched the cynical flower arrangement that Larry Atwood sent to Doug for the club's opening! Without the license to serve liquor, club patrons are dwindling to nothing! In fact, after Greg and Amanda leave, there are no other guests, so they close the place early!
Doug feels terrible. And worse yet, he feels that he's somehow let Julie down! Julie knows this, and goes to their lawyer. She tells him they can't afford to wait so long for the hearing. She says the way things are going they will probably have to close before then! She is insistent on using her inheritance money so she can buy the Club and have it put in her name. That way the road would be clear for a liquor license. The lawyer tells her that such a transaction will be very costly-will eat up her inheritance -- but Julie is insistent. Hers is a labor of love, and nothing can dissuade her. She knows that Doug will agree to the change-welcome it if it will get them a liquor license-as long as he doesn't know it will cost Julie so much. Julie asks the lawyer promise not to divulge the cost.
And Samantha has skipped town! She's on a flight to Los Angeles! As "Marlena" Samantha turned over the care of "Samantha" to the doctor at tile sanitarium. Then, upon visiting a lucid "Samantha" who was very much aware that she was really her own self -- Marlena -- Samantha told her she had to change places with her-to save her. Samantha tells Marlena that Marlena had a break-down, and if that had ever become known to her friends and co-workers, she would have been ruined in Salem forever! Samantha tells Marlena that she is indeed better now, and that in one week she can sign herself out and go home and resume her life . . .
When Don finally unravels the entire messy Marlena/Samantha incident, he rushes to the airport, ultimately confronting Samantha on her Los Angeles-bound flight as it readies for takeoff! To try and save herself, Samantha hands out to Don the same ridiculous story she told Marlena-that she did it to save Marlena's career and personal life. Samantha again bases her far-out story on her "facts" -- that Marlena suffered a breakdown before she had her admitted as "Samantha." Don doesn't buy the outrageous story, however, and as security guards force the outraged attourney off the plane, he vows to have Samantha extradited-to have her brought back to
Salem and to stand trial -- for impersonating a medical doctor-practising without a license -- and, most of all, for the havoc, mentally, emotionally and physically, she wrought on Marlena!
HELPING HAND
When Don tells Laura of Samantha's story and of his plans to bring her to justice, Laura is in adamant agreement. Meantime, their prime concern is Marlena. Marlena is still groggy from the drug treatment and Samantha's brainwashing, so she is staying in the sanitarium; but this time for good reasons! Don, of course, visits her every day, offering her the kind of comfort and assurance that only a concerned, caring and loving man can bring to a woman -- and Laura, both as a friend and psychiatrist, has daily sessions with Marlena to help her grasp her elusive bits of memory and retain them. Dr. Powell, meantime, has called Dr. Paul Whitman, and he, too, calls up Marlena and offers his help. Oh. it's so good to finally have all Marlena's friends and loved ones at last realize that she is indeed the one and only Marlena!
But the problems are brewing elsewhere! Having discovered that Jean has spent $50 to attend the battered wives' sessions, Fred is incensed, and again he beats up Jean-and again she won't defend herself. But slowly, with the help of Maggie and the group, Jean gains in strength and confidence. She gives Fred one more chance, and, when he abuses that chance-by abusing her-she leaves him! But does that stop this very sick man? No way! He storms over to Maggie's house, and accusing her of being a homewrecker, brutally punches her!
Julie and Doug, meantime, have decided to "get away from it all" -- the lack of business at Doug's place and the inscrutable Larry Atwood! -- and head for a New England vacation! They leave Hope with Maggie, Mickey and Janice, and let's hope that Julie and Doug's return will mark a new beginning and prosperity for Doug's place . . .
Oh, woe is Linda! Nothing is more devastating to a woman of Linda's range of considerable scheming, than to have her plans go so awry when everything looked so good! Meeting Bob for dinner one night, Linda was so certain he would propose-- indeed, he held her hands and quite seriously said he had something important to ask her -- when he was drowned out by Robert's loud singing! After leaving Doug's Place, Linda is again certain -- especially when he says he has a proposal to make -- only to find out it's a business proposal -- to be his executive assistant!
Another woman without a husband is Toni -- but she is quite happy. Indeed, she just had her baby! Named Naiobi Johnson, she was just a small thing-only 4 pounds, so she must spend some time in an incubator.
SAMANTHA IS ARRESTED!
When Don tells Marlena of his plans to have Samantha extradited, Marlena is upset. She still blames herself, partly, for Samantha's problems. She tells Don she won't go along with his plans to have Samantha extradited. Still, Samantha is placed under arrest in Los Angeles -- after a light with her agent over her erratic behavior and drug problem!
Paul Whitman is also trying to help Marlena, but she cannot accept his blaming Samantha for her condition, either. They reach an impasse. And Laura, having agreed to spend a few weeks with Marlena to help her, may be jeopardizing her own happiness. Thanks to Kate, Bill is relieved of tile graveyard shift-only to find that Laura, loyal to helping Marlena-refuses to come home to him at night!
When Mary finds that her father offered Linda the choice.job as his assistant, she is furious. She is sure Linda is after Bob! Working late at her apartment one night, Chris tries to console Mary, and they end up in a passionate embrace! But Mary won't let herself go-she distrusts men-and what might have been a wonderful affair with Chris seems to have fizzled -- for the moment, at least!
